समयान्तरयात्रा

Adapted from the movie Interstellar and Srimad Bhagavatam where there is time travel and the resulting time dilation

द्वापरयुगे अवतीर्णः भगवान् बलरामः विवाहितः पुरुषः आसीत् | तस्य पत्नी रेवती सप्तविंशतिमहायुगेभ्यः प्राक् जन्म प्राप्तवती | तदनु वयसि सा वृद्धा सङ्कर्षणस्य पूर्वजा इव तथापि सा सुन्दरी आकर्षकी मेधाविनी युवतिः वयसि हलाधरेण समाना च आसीत् | तत् कथं स्यात् | आधुनिकभौतिकशास्त्रे समयस्य विषये बहु गवेषणं कृतम् | समयः जालः इव सङ्कुचितः प्रसारितः वा भवेत् इति बोधितः | एकस्मिन् लोके पञ्चनिमेषाणाम् अवधिः अपरस्मिन् शाश्वतीस्समाः इव अनुभूताः | रेवत्याः प्रसङ्गः अपि तथैव |

Lord Balarama, who descended in Dvapara Yuga, was a married man. His wife Revati was born 27 Mahayugas earlier (Each Mahayuga is 4,320,000). Consequently, she was old and comparable to an ancestor of her husband. Yet, she was attractive, intelligent, and about the same age as Balarama. How is that possible? A lot of research has happened concerning time in Modern Physics . It is revealed that time, similar to a web, can be expanded or contracted. In one world, an interval of 5 minutes is experienced as eternity in another. Revati’s situation was also similar. 

रामशेषः कश्चन छात्रः | विश्वविद्यालये सः भौतिकशास्त्रविभागे विद्यार्थिनाम् अन्यतमः आसीत् | एकदा सन्ध्याकाले भोजनालये मित्रं उमेशः उपरामशेषं गत्वा अपृच्छत् राम Interstellar इति नूतनचलनचित्रं शोभते इति श्रुतं मया | निर्देशकः Christopher Nolan भौतिकशास्त्रप्रियः Einstein-महोदयस्य सिद्धान्तान् उपयुज्य इदं विज्ञानकाल्पनिकं चलनचित्रं विनिर्मितवान् स्यात् | अध्येतारः वयं च सर्वे मिलित्वा निश्चयेन गच्छेम रात्रौ | इति |

Ramasesha was a student. He was one of the students in the physics department of his college. One evening his friend Umesh approached him and said, “Ram! I heard the movie Interstellar rocks. The director Christoper Nolan, a Physics lover, has used Einstein's theories to perhaps make this fictional movie. We students should all go together tonight.”

नववादने पञ्चषाः उत्साहग्रस्ताः पादाभ्यां वायुप्रहारे प्रदेशे ससन्तोषं चित्रमन्दिरं प्रति उपचक्रिरे | यावत् उमेशः धनपीठतः चीटिकान् क्रीत्वा प्रत्यागतवान् तावता अन्ये लाजाः अवभर्जितभोजनानि  विविधपानीयानि इत्येतैः सज्जाः आसन् | चलनचित्रे आरब्धे सति रामशेषः सद्यः निबद्धचक्षुः आविष्टः च अभवत् | समाप्तिसमये सर्वेषां महान् आनन्दः विस्मयः च | गृहगमनसमये केनचित् उक्तम् Einstein’s Relativity-शास्त्रम् इव चित्रमन्दिरे होराद्वयं निमेषद्वयम् इव अतीतम् |

At 9.00 five or six excited students happily walked through a windy region towards the theater. By the time Umesh bought the tickets from the counter, others were ready with popcorn, fried snacks, and soft drinks. When the move began, Ramesh was immediately drawn and his eyes were transfixed. When it ended, everyone was amazed and happy. While going home, someone remarked, “True to Einstein’s theory, the two hour movie was experienced as though in two minutes.”

अन्यस्मिन अहनि रामशेषः मातमह्या मेलितुं गतवान् | मातामही पायसं पिबन्तं तं अपृच्छत् चलनचित्रं कथम् आसीत् इति | सः उत्साहपूर्वकं कथनं श्रावितुम् आरब्धवान् | समयः यदस्माभिः ज्ञायते तद्विश्वे सर्वत्र समानः इत्युक्ते स्थलद्वयोः निमेषाः होराः तथा दिनानि सर्वदा साम्येन अतीयन्ते इति मिथ्या | एतत् सावधानम् आकर्ण्य | कश्चन प्रसङ्गः | नूतनभूम्यन्वेषणार्थं वैज्ञानिकाः अन्तरिक्षयात्रां कृत्वा Miller इति कस्यचन  ग्रहसस्य समीपे प्राप्तवन्तः | आदौ एव काचित् तत्र गतवती अन्तरिक्षयात्रिका सम्पर्कनष्टा जाता अतः तस्याः साहाय्यं कर्तुम् एते गतवन्तः | ग्रहस्य नातिदूरे किञ्चित् प्रकाशशून्यं बलवत् महागुरुत्वं मृतनक्षत्रेण उत्पादितं कृष्णविवरम् (Black Hole) आसीत् | एतस्य महागुरुत्वकारणेन Miller ग्रहस्य समयः भूलोकतः मन्दं याति इति वैज्ञानकैः निरूपितम् | तस्य एका होरा भूलोके सप्तवर्षाणां साम्यं भवति |

The next day, Ramsesha went to meet his maternal grandmother. She asked him while he was drinking Payasam, “How was the movie?” He began to excitedly recount. “Time as we know it is not constant everywhere. What I mean to say is that at two places minutes, hours, or days elapse at the same rate is untrue. Listen to this carefully. An incident in the movie. Scientists, in search of newer lands, travel by space to a planet Miller and go near it. One of them had already gone there prior but lost contact with the rest so they all went to help her. Not far from the planet was a strong black hole that was created from a dead star that had an immense gravitational field from which even light cannot escape. Because of its mighty gravity, Miller’s time beat slowly. Scientists had found that one hour there was equal to 7 years on earth.”

अन्तरिक्षयात्रिकेषु कश्चन तत्रैव आकाशे निर्मिते अन्तरिक्षस्थानके (Space station) अतिष्ठत् यावत् यात्रिकात्रयं Miller ग्रहे अवतीर्य अन्विष्टवत् | तत्र वाहनं परितः विद्यमानः समुद्रः गाधः अतः ते स्थातुं अशक्नुवन् | यात्रिकाम् अन्विष्यन् ते दूरे समुद्रान्ते उन्नतपर्वताः अपश्यन् | सा कुत्रापि न दृश्यते स्म | किञ्चित्कालाभन्यन्तरे समुद्रस्य तरङ्गाः उन्नततराः भवितुम् आरब्धाः | तेषां नायकः आक्रोशत् हा दूरस्थाः एते पर्वताः अचलाः न परन्तु जलतरङ्गाः एव | पलायनीयम् इति उक्त्वा यानं प्रति धावितवान् | तरङ्गाणाम् सङ्घट्टनेन ततः अपघातेन च त्रिषु जनेषु अन्यतमः मृतः अभवत्  | समुत्पन्नेन कोलाहलेन प्रस्थाने अतीव विलम्बः जातः | उपरि अन्तरिक्षस्थले प्राप्ते सति यात्रिकाणाम् महत् आश्चर्यम् अभूत् | स्थानीयवैज्ञानिकः धृतस्मश्रुः पलितकेशः द्वारम् उद्घाट्य सविषादम् उक्तवान् कुत्र गतम् | त्रयोविंशतिसंवत्सरम् अतीत्य वृद्धोऽहम् | इति |

“Of the astronauts, one of them stayed back at the space station while others landed on the planet and searched. The sea near their spacecraft was shallow so they could stand. Searching for the astronaut they saw tall mountains on the horizon. She wasn’t seen anywhere. After a few moments the sea-waves were becoming taller. Their leader shouted, “Hey! The tall and immovable structures far away aren’t actually mountains but waves! We ought to escape,” and saying so he rushed to the spacecraft. Due to the collision of the waves and an ensuing accident, one of the three astronauts died. They were amazed when they reached the space station. The astronaut who stayed back had a beard and white hair and on opening the door he said, “Where did you all go? Twenty three years have elapsed and I am now old.”

कथां श्रुतवत्याः मातामह्याः उत्साहः अवर्धत | वत्स एतदस्माकं महाभारते भागवतपुराणे च विद्यते | दौहित्रः चमसं अधः निवेश्य त्रिपादपूरितमुखेन पृष्टवान् एवं वा ? मां निबोध तर्हि इति | मातामही उक्तवती अस्तु श्रावयामि | सावधानं शृणु इति | मातामह्या कथनम् आरब्धम् | रेवतः नाम कश्चन राजा | शतपुत्रकः सः समुद्रस्य गभीरे अधोभागे कुशथलीं नाम नगरीं विनिर्माय तत्रत्यान् देशान् पालितवान्  | रेवतस्य तेषु पुत्रेषु ककुद्मिः ज्येष्ठः उत्तमः बलवाञ्च | कालक्रमेण सोऽपि राजा बभूव | तस्य शासने सर्वत्र शान्तिः समृद्धिः जनेषु धार्मिकता च प्रवर्तन्ते स्म  | रेवतवंशे ककुद्मेः समुत्पन्ना पुत्री रेवती | राज्ञः तस्यां बालायां विशेषप्रीतिः आसीत् | गच्छता कालेन बाला प्रवृध्य युवती सञ्जाता | न केवलं राजकुमारी बुद्धिमत्तया अनुपमा अपि तु अपारेण सौन्दर्येण सर्वेषां नेत्रेभ्यः अत्यन्तम् आकृष्टा च अभवत् |

The grandma who was listening to the story got excited. “Dear! This is also there in our Mahabharata and Bhagavada-Puranam. The grandson put his spoon down and spoke through a mouthful of food, “Is that so? Enlighten me.” The grandma said, “Alright I shall narrate. Listen carefully.” She began telling. “Revata was a king. With a hundred sons, he made his capital as Kushasthali at the depths of the Ocean and ruled the lands there. His son, Kakudmi, was the oldest, strongest, and the best. In time, he also became a king. In his rule there was peace, abundance, and righteousness. His daughter, from the lineage of Revata, was Revati. The king liked the little girl a lot. In the passage of time, she became a young woman. Not only was her intellect incomparable, her beauty was alluring to the many eyes.  

राजा सचिवान् आहूय सूचितवान् भोः रेवती विवाहवयस्का जाता अतः तस्याः कृते योग्यः वरः अन्वेषणीयः | तस्याः गुणान् धियं नैपुण्यं तथा परिगणय्य ज्ञायते यद्वरान्वेषणे काठिन्यं वर्तते | उचिताः विवाह्याः पुरुषाः एतस्यै दुर्लभाः | अतः मम कष्टम् अपनेतुं  ब्रह्मलोकं गत्वा ब्रह्मणः वचः शृणुयाम् इति सङ्कल्पितवान् | तावत्पर्यन्तं भवन्तः शासतु इति |

The king called his ministers and said, “Revati is of a marriageable age and a suitable groom ought to be searched. Taking into account her intellect, excellence, and qualities as such it is clear that searching for a husband is going to be difficult. Suitors worthy of her are going to be rare. I have therefore decided to travel to Brahmaloka and listen to him to ease my burden. Until then you all please rule.”

एवं पुत्र्या सह अपावृतं सत्यलोकं सम्प्राप्तवान् | भगवान् स्वयम्भूः तत्र गान्धर्वसङ्गीतकार्यक्रमे लीनः अतः ककुद्मिरेवत्यौ ऐश्वर्ययुक्ते विशाले प्रासादे उपविश्य क्षमया प्रतीक्षेते स्म | किञ्चिद्कालानन्तरं कार्यक्रमे समाप्ते जाते प्रजापतिः एतयोः आगमनवार्तां श्रुत्वा ताभ्यां मेलितुं प्रस्थितवान् | ककुद्मिमहाराजः चतुर्मुखपादस्य पादयोः साष्टाङ्गं नमस्कृत्य स्वस्य प्रयाणोद्देशं व्याकुलतां च निवेदितवान् | 

“Thus, the king traveled to the untarnished Satyaloka with his daughter. However, lord Brahma was busy in some Gandharva music program and Kakudmi and his daughter had to sit and wait patiently in the large and opulent palace. In a few, when the program ended, Brahma on hearing their arrival went to meet them both. Kakudmi fell flat at the feet of Brahma and revealed the nature of this visit and his concern.”

भगवान् ब्रह्मा राज्ञा श्रावितं वृत्तान्तं निशम्य उच्चैः हसितुम् आरभत | ककुद्मिः दिग्भ्रान्तः सन् उवाच देव अपराधः कृतो मया इति | चतुराननः राजानं  सान्त्वयन् उक्तवान् | नैव | भोः ककुद्मे यत्पृथिवी त्वया ज्ञाता तदिदानीं नास्ति तत्र परन्तु तत्स्थाने भिन्ना नूतना च भूमिः वर्तते | भूम्यां नद्यः पर्वताः क्षेत्राणि च इति सर्वेषां भूप्रदेशानां महत् परिवर्तनम् अभूत् | भूलोके ये ये राजानः ब्राह्मणः रेवत्याः विवाहार्थं योग्याः पुरुषाः स्युः तेषां सर्वेषां निधनं अभवत् | न केवलं तेषाम् अपि तु तेषां अपत्यानाम् अपत्यानाम् अपत्यवंशानां च | इति |

“Lord Brahma, on hearing everything the king said, began to laugh loudly. Kakudmi concernedly said, ‘Lord, have I committed an offense?’ The four faced Brahma pacifying him began narrating. ‘No, not all. Oh Kakudmi, the world you know is not the same now but in its place is a new land. The rivers, mountains, fields, and the entire landscape has undergone a massive change. The kings and Brahamanas, whoever were worthy of marrying Revati, have all died. Not only they but also their children, their children, and the lineage of their children.’” 

ककुद्मेः उद्घाटितं मुखं पश्यतः ब्रह्मणः कथनं प्रवृत्तम् | न अवगम्यते खलु | उभयोः भू-सत्यलोकयोः समयस्य साम्यं नास्ति | यावत्समयं रेवती भवान् च अत्र प्रतीक्षां कृतवन्तौ तावति काले भूलोकस्य सप्तविंशतिः महायुगाः समाप्ताः सन्ति | भूलोकस्य अपेक्षया अत्रत्यः समयः प्रसारितः इव दृश्यते अतः मन्दं गच्छति | भवतः हृदये चितवराणां वंशः प्रायः प्रणष्टः | तेषां नामानि श्रोतुं अपि न शक्नोषि | कुतो वा तेषाम् अन्वेषणम् |

“Brahma, seeing Kakudmi’s mouth that was wide open, continued. ‘You don’t get it do you? The time isn’t constant between earth and Brahmaloka. During the time interval you and Revati spent waiting, 27 Mahayugas had elapsed on earth. In comparison to earth, the time appears to be stretched here and thus beats slowly. The lineage of the grooms you probably desired in your heart is probably destroyed. You can’t even hear their names. To speak of finding them is impossible.’”

एतत् सर्वं श्रुतवतः ककुद्मेः हृदयं भग्नं जातं इव | प्रजापतिः पुनः उक्तवान् सर्वं न विनष्टं ककुद्मे | भूलोके त्रेतायुगं समाप्य द्वापरयुगः प्रवृत्तः | भगवान् केशव: धृतावतारः वसुधाम् अलङ्करोति | श्रीकृष्णस्य महाबलः देवदेवांशः भ्राता हलायुधः बलरामः प्राप्तवस्कः अतः रेवत्याः योग्यः वरः स्यात् | गच्छ तत्र | तव कन्यारत्नं तस्मै नररत्नाय देहि भोः इति | इत्युक्त्वा ब्रह्मा पुत्रीपितरौ ततः मर्त्यलोकाय प्रेषितवान् | इति मतामही समापितवती | पुराणेषु अपि एताः अंशाः निरूपिताः सन्ति खलु इति कथितवती |

“Hearing all this, it appeared that Kakudmi’s heart was broken. Brahma continued. ‘Everything's not lost, oh Kakudmi! Tretayuga is over and Dwaparayuga has started. Lord Keshava has taken an avatar beautifully decorating the earth. Lord Krishna’s brother, the strong and mighty who carries a plough and is a manifestation of the divine, Balarama is also of a marriageable age and a worthy groom. Go there and give this jewel of your daughter to the jewel amongst the men.’ Thus saying so, Brahma sent the father and daughter back to the earth.” With that, the grandma concluded her story. “Such instances are also revealed in our Puranas, aren’t they?” she added. 

रामशेषः आश्चर्यान्वितः बहुविषयान् एतान् चिन्तयन् गृहं गतवान् | मया इतोऽपि ज्ञातव्यम् इति |

Ramasesha was wonderstruck and thinking of these he went home. I should probably know more, he decided.
