एकदा यदा सूर्यः अस्तं गतः तदा भोः वाहनारम्भसमये रूक्षः गर्जनशब्दः श्रूयते इति वदन्ती मम व्याकुलिता भार्या गृहं प्रविष्टा | अयि तैलपरिवर्तनसमयः प्रायः सन्निहितः इति तां सान्त्वयन् उक्तवान् अहम् | वस्तुतः मम वाहनं जीर्णं होण्डा-अकोर्ड्-कारयानं यत् सार्धदशवर्षेभ्यः पूर्वं आवाभ्यां क्रीतम् आसीत् | तदहं बहुकालेभ्यो निर्विघ्नं निःशङ्कं च चालितवान् आसम् | कदाचित् वाहनसेवादिकार्यं प्रमादेन समयानुगुणं न कारितं स्यात् | परन्तु लब्धकीर्ति होण्डाकार्यानं जनान् गरुडः नन्दिः वा इव श्रद्धया सेवते इत्यपि बहूनां वाहनप्रियाणां मतम् | अतः अधिकचिन्तनं न दत्तम् |

Once, when the sun had set, my wife entered the house anxiously saying, “Dear! While starting the car I heard a harsh roaring sound.” Calming her, I said, “It’s probably time for an oil change.” In fact, my vehicle is an old Honda Accord which we’d purchased over 10 years ago. I had driven this for many years without any strange occurrences. Due to my negligence, I hadn’t serviced the car on time. After all, the Accord was widely known as a man’s Garuda or Nandi, so I never put too much thought into it. 

केषाञ्चित दिनानाम् अनन्तरं भार्या पुनरुद्विग्नमनसा उद्याने तृणं कर्तयन्तं मां न्यवेदयत् वाहने चालनचक्रस्य पुरतः काचप्रर्दशिन्यां भयजनकः यन्त्रपरिशीलनदीपः प्रज्वलितः अस्ति इति | चालनसमये मार्गमध्ये वाहनं स्थगितं भवेद्वा इति भयत्रस्ता जाता | तस्यान्ते कश्चिन्निगूढः दोषः स्यात् इति दीपः बोधयति | इदानीमेव समूलं उत्पाटनीयम् | झटिति वाहननिर्मातुः सम्पर्कं कृत्वा होण्डास्थले वाहनं निक्षिप्य तस्य स्वास्थ्यं यथा सम्यग्भवेत् तथा शीघ्रं कारयतु इति |

Days later, my agitated wife declared, “The ominous “Check Engine Light” at the glass display in front of the steering is lit. I was scared the car would stop midway while driving. The light probably means there is a malfunction within. We have to get to the root of the problem right away. Quickly contact the Honda dealer and give them the vehicle so it can be fixed. 

अलं चिन्तया | वाहनस्य दोषनिवारणम् इत्येतत् उचितं चिन्तनं परन्तु निर्माणस्थलं मास्तु | तत्र्त्याः वाहनसमीकर्तारः वस्तुतः धनचूषकाः | वाहनं समीकरणोद्देशेन अपेक्षितं शुल्कं द्विगुणितं त्रिगुणितं वा करिष्यन्ते | तत्कारणतः मध्यमवर्गीयं वाहनशिल्पिनं प्रति नेतव्यम् इति मृदुस्वरेण तस्याः बाहुं स्पृशता मया उपशमनम् कृतम् | 

“Enough! Don’t panic. You are right that we have to fix the fault but let’s not take it to the dealer. The mechanics there are money suckers. They’d double or triple the expected costs with intentions of fixing the car. Therefore, we should take it to a mid-grade mechanic,” I said, pacifying her, pressing her arms. 

अस्मदीयः कोरियादेशीयः आह्नमहोदयः ज्ञायते खलु | समीपवर्ती सः आत्मीयः विश्वासार्हश्च | अल्पमूल्यने वाहनं परीक्ष्यते | इति आत्मविश्वासपूर्वकं मया उक्तम् | अनन्तरदिने अहं प्रात: एव शीघ्रम् उत्थाय चायपानहस्तः तस्य आपणं सवाहनं सम्प्राप्तवान् | परीक्षणवस्तूनि सामग्र्यादयः तत्र तत्र भूम्यां विकीर्णाः आसन् | कोणे कार्यरतः समीकर्ता मां न अपश्यत् | पुरातनवाहनानां मध्ये सः चक्रं गृह्णन् तीक्ष्णदृष्ट्या कीलविदीर्णां काञ्चित् नेमिं उद्वीक्षितवान् | तावता मम पृष्ठतः त्रयः ग्राहकाः पङ्क्तौ लग्नाः अभवन् | मम वाहनं वीक्षमाणः शिल्पी माम् अवलोक्य कुशलक्षेमादिकं पृष्ट्वा का समस्या | किमर्थं भवान् अत्र आगतः इति अपृच्छत् | मया परिस्थितिः उक्ता | 

“You know our Korean Mechanic, Mr. Ahn, don’t you. He is close by and a trusted friend. He will check the car for a small figure,” I said confidently. The next day, I rose early and reached his shop with coffee in my hands. All kinds of test equipment and machines lay scattered on the floor. He was busy at a corner and didn’t see me. Amidst all the old cars he was holding a wheel and was looking up, concentrating on a tire pierced by a nail. By then, three customers had lined up. Observing my vehicle, he looked at me. After asking how I was doing, he said, “What is the problem? What brings you here?” I explained to him what was going on. 

वाहनं निधाय द्विहोराभ्यन्तरे यावत् अहं पार्श्वस्थम् उपहारमन्दिरं प्रविष्य प्रातराशं समापितवान् तावता वाहनं परिशील्य शिल्पिना आहूय उक्तञ्च | देव सङ्गणकविधिना वाहनं परीक्ष्य विशेषतः केऽपि शारीरिकदोषाः न लब्धाः | अतः सङ्गणकादेशेन वाहनं पूर्ववत् यथा भवेत् तथा सुरक्षितम् | इदानीं तु यन्त्रपरिशीलनदीपः न प्रज्वलितः अस्ति | प्रदर्शिनी अन्धकारमयी निर्वापितः एव अतः भवान् वाहनं प्रतिग्रहीतुम् अर्हति | दीपस्य विषये अवधानं भवतु | यदि पुनः उज्ज्वलति तर्हि अत्र आनयतु | परन्तु ज्ञेयं तैलं अत्यन्तं कलुषितमासीत् अतः तस्य परिवर्तनावश्यकता सन्निहिता भवेत् इति | 

By the time I entered the nearby cafe and finished my breakfast, after giving him my vehicle, the mechanic, having examined the vehicle, called me and said, “Sir! I used the computer to check and couldn’t find any faults as such. So I restored your car to the default setting. Right now the “check engine light” is not on. The display is dark so you can take the car back. Please be mindful of the light. If it turns on again, then bring it back. However, do know that the oil was very dirty so an oil-change is impending.

गृहं गत्वा विगतचिन्तः सहर्षं पत्नीं अब्रवम् भार्ये सः श्रद्धावान् निश्शुल्कं वाहनं समीकृतवान् इति | एषः प्रसङ्गः यद्यपि द्विवारं पुनरायात् तथापि शिल्पी यानं तथैव परिहृतवान् | परन्तु मम प्रारब्धकर्मणः लक्षणं भिन्नम् | सप्ताहद्वये जाते प्रातः पुत्रीं विद्यालयप्रापनसमये वाहनं न आरब्धम् | यद्यपि तिष्ठतः यानतः कुर् कुर् शब्दः श्रुतः तथापि नष्टसज्ञं शववत् स्थितम् | काचप्रदर्शिन्यां वाहनस्य अस्वस्थतां बोधयन्ति कानिचन चिह्नानि प्रज्वलितानि आसन् | यानपथे शिरोकेशान् विघर्षन् मृतप्रायं वाहनं पश्यन् सम्पूर्णतया जागरितवान् | पत्नी बहिरागत्य ब्रुवं वक्रीकृत्य कठोरस्वरेण अनिन्दत् | जरापीडितं वाहनं प्रायः निष्कासनीयम् आसीत् | मम वचनानुसरं होण्डास्थलं प्रति नेतव्यम् इति इदानीमपि सर्वथा उचिततरम् | अधुना वा विवेकशून्यः विना भूत्वा तत्र नयतु च इति |

I returned home, free from anxiety, and told my wife, “Dear! Our sincere mechanic has fixed the car without a fee.” Even though this episode recurred a few times, the mechanic fixed it the same way. However, my fate was different. Two weeks passed and my vehicle didn’t start when it was time for me to drop my daughter to school. Despite hearing sputtering sounds from the vehicle, it laid there, dead as a corpse. On the display, I could see a few symbols showing something wasn’t right with the car. On the driveway, standing, scratching my head, and staring at my almost-dead car, I fully woke up. My wife came out, frowned at me, and harshly said, “We should have discarded our old car. Even now, taking it to the dealer makes much more sense. At least now, use your sense of reasoning and take it there. 

किङ्कर्तव्यताभावः मम शरीरं व्याप्नोत् | तस्याः वचनम् अविगण्य्य स्वपरिचितं सर्वज्ञं वाहनदक्षं आह्नमहोदयम् एव पुनः चित्वा तम् आहूय मम दुस्स्थितं न्यवेदयम् | दूरवाण्या दीर्घं निश्वस्य सः पृष्टवान् | भवतः अभिरक्षपत्रिकासु किं लिखितम् अस्ति | तद्द्वारा भारणोधरणसेवां स्वीकर्तुं शक्यम् वा इति | भाग्यवशात् मम तादृशः अधिकारः आसीत् | एकहोराभ्यन्तरे भारणोधरणवाहनं मम गृहम् आगत्य रज्जुबद्धं गतप्राणं कारयानम् आकृष्य समीकारस्थलं प्रापयत् | 

I wasn’t sure what to do next. Not paying attention to what she said, I still chose the all-knowing expert mechanic I knew. I called him and informed him of my situation. He exhaled and asked, “what is written in your insurance? Are you eligible for a tow-truck?” Luckily I was entitled for one. In an hour, the tow-truck came and pulled my almost-dead car to the mechanic shop.

गृहे स्थिते अचिरेण तस्य दूरवाणीध्वनिः मया श्रुतः | श्रीमन् वाहनस्य केम्-सेन्सर् पोसिशन्-सेन्सर् च इति आन्तरिकभागद्वयं प्रायः भग्नम् | तस्य परिवर्तनम् कर्तुं शक्यम् इति शुभवार्ता | तदर्थं नूतनभागाः क्रेतव्याः | अपि च दुःखकरी वार्ता अस्ति यत् इदं कार्यं न सुलभम् इति तेन उक्तम् | एतत् श्रुतवतः मम हृदयाघातः इव जातः | एवं सति महान् व्ययः अपेक्षितः किम् इति मध्यमायाः नखं दशन् अहं पृष्टवान् | आम् प्रायः द्विसहस्रं भवेत् इत्यहम् ऊहे इति सः उत्तरितवान् | किञ्चित् कालं विचिन्त्य भग्नहृदयः निराशया कारयितुम् आज्ञापितवान् | 

When I was home, I heard my phone ring. “Sir, it appears two of your parts, a cam sensor and position sensor, are busted. It is possible to change them, which is good news. You also need to buy new parts. However, it is not an easy job.” I felt as though I had a heart attack. Biting my middle fingernail, I asked, “Do you expect it to cost a lot?” He replied saying it is probably a couple thousand dollars. After some time, being heart broken and not wanting to do it, I agreed.

वाहनसमीकारः परेद्यवि तेन सह मेलितुं गतवन्तं माम् अब्रवीत् | वाहनम् आरब्धुं शक्यं भोः परन्तु लब्धसज्ञं तत् चालनसमये नितरां कम्पते | इतोऽपि भग्नांशाः अन्वेष्टव्याः इति भाति | अनुमतिः दीयताम् इति | संशयम् आपन्नः अहं धनव्ययभयः प्रतिपृष्ट्ववान् | ऊहाक्रीडा मास्तु भोः | दृढविश्वासेन वदतु | निश्चयेन ज्ञायते वा | नोचेत् भागद्वयं त्रयं वा परिवर्त्य एव वक्तुं शक्नोति इति | क्षणकालं विचिन्त्य अपगतविश्वासः सः संशयलब्धस्वरेण उक्तवान् | तावत् ज्ञानं नास्ति श्रीमन् | प्रायः भवान पार्श्वस्थं होण्डास्थलं प्रति नेतुम् अर्हति | तेषां उपकरणानि मम यन्त्रेभ्यो अतिशेरते | सावधानं मन्दं च चालयति चेत् तत्र निर्बाधं प्रविशति | 

The mechanic spoke to me when I went to meet him. “Now, I can start the car and it is alive, but it shakes a lot. There are probably more broken parts. I got to look for it. I need your permission.” I was doubtful and fearing more expense; I questioned him further. “Please don’t play a guessing game. You need to tell me confidently. Do you know for sure if it will work, or will you change two or three parts and then know?” For a moment, he reflected, and lacking confidence he spoke doubtfully, “You probably have to take the car to the Honda Dealer. Their instruments are superior to mine. If you drive slowly and carefully, you will reach there without any incidents.”

ततः निष्क्रान्तः अहं वेपमानं अस्थिरं वाहनं वाहनसम्मर्धे रुद्धं स्यात् इति भिया कथमपि देवं प्रार्थयन् तत्र प्रापितवान् | तत्रत्या कृशकाया लेखनहस्ता काचित् सुन्दरी कर्मचारीणी मम विवरणानि लिखित्वा उपनेत्रकोणेन मां वीक्ष्यमाणा अवदत् शिल्पिषु अधिपम् आह्वयामि इति | सः आगत्य कागदं अधीयानः कुशलप्रश्नान् पृष्ट्वा अस्तु तर्हि भवदीयाः समीकर्तारः वाहनसमस्यायाः परिहारे विफलाः इत्यनेन अत्र आनीतं ननु इति उपहासपूर्वकम् अपृच्छत् | एतावता लज्जितमुख: अहं किं वा वदामि स्म | तस्य कथनं प्रवृत्तं अलं चिन्तया अस्मदीयाः समीकारकाः अधीतशास्त्रा: श्रीमन् | न वा अत्र वयं समस्यापरिहारान् ऊहामहे | श्वः समाधानं किं इति वदामि इति | ऊबर्यानेन अहं मौनं कार्यालयं प्रस्थितः | यत् अल्पमूल्यं अपेक्षितं कार्यं तत् मम मनिषिकां अतिक्रम्य कथं वा बहूमूल्यं सञ्जातम् | 

Leaving there, I drove the unsteady and shaking vehicle, fearing it would stop in the middle of the traffic. Praying, I somehow took the car there. A slender and pretty saleswoman with a pen in her hand took down my information and looked at me through the corner of her glasses and spoke, “I shall call the lead mechanic.” He came and inquired about my situation, reading the notes, and condescendingly said, “So your mechanics failed at fixing the car and that’s why you got it here?” Being shamefaced, what could I say? He continued, “It's alright! Our mechanics are well learned. Nor do we guess what operations to perform. I shall let you know the fix tomorrow.” I left for work in an Uber. How could what should have cost me less, exceed the estimate and cost me so much more?”

अनतरदिने मयि मध्याह्नभोजनं कुर्वति सति होण्डा-विक्रेता आहूय आत्मविश्वासेन प्रतीक्षमाणं मां उक्तवान् | श्रीमन् आन्तरिकभागाः परीक्षिताः | कालनियामिक-शृङ्खला (Timing Chain) नाम कश्चन मुख्यभागः त्रुटित: | तं परिवर्त्य वाहनं समीकर्तुं शक्नुमः | अन्यथा वाहनं युवसदृशं प्रकाशते | इतोऽपि शतसहस्रं-मैल्स् परिमितं दूरं निर्विघ्नं चालयितुं शक्नुयात् | अस्माकं शिलिपिनां कार्यं किञ्चित् क्लिष्टकरं स्यात् परन्तु शक्यं अतः शुल्कं दिवसहस्रम् | दिनत्रयाभ्यन्तरे कारयानं लप्स्यते इति | किञ्चित् कालं विरम्य सन्देहपूर्वकं अपृच्छत् | भवता ज्ञातम् इतः पूर्वम् अहं दष्टः इति | मूल्यम् अधिकम् अतः निदानम् उचितं खलु इति | सः प्रत्युत्तरितवान् अत्र न संशयः भोः | निस्सन्देहं वदामि तत्रैव दोषः | भवदीया पूर्वघटना इव न सम्भवेत् इति प्रतिज्ञां करोमि इति | 

The next day, while I was having my lunch, the dealer called me when I was expecting his call, and confidently said, “We examined the parts. The timing chain, an important piece, is broken. It is possible to fix the car by changing it. Otherwise the car looks young and great. You can probably drive another 100 miles worry-free. But the work is slightly tough for our mechanics, but not something we can’t do. Therefore, it would cost 2000 dollars. You will get your car in two to three days.” I thought for a while and asked him doubtfully, “You know I have been bitten before. Your cost is high. Are you sure the diagnosis is right?” He responded, “There is no question about it. I can confidently say that is where the problem is. I can promise you it won’t be like your previous incident.”

यथा प्रतिश्रुतं आसीत् तथा वाहनं सिद्धम् अभवत् | तत्र गत्वा होण्डास्थले रोकपालाय ऋणाहरणपत्रद्वारा अर्पितधनः वाहनकुञ्चिकां गृह्णन् यदा ततः निर्गन्तुं सन्नद्धः तदा स एव व्यापारी मां उद्दिश्य कथितवान् | देव एतादृशसमस्यायाः अग्रे निवारणाय होण्डायानानां तैलपरिवर्तनं समयानुगुणं कुर्यात् | अपि च अन्यथा मा चिन्तयतु परन्तु अल्पज्ञातृृन् अविवेकिनः अन्यशिल्पिनः प्रति वाहनं किं वा नयति | अनुचितः धनव्ययः अल्पस्य हेतोर्बहुहातुमिच्छन्निति न्यायः इव भवति खलु | वयं वाहनक्षेत्रेषु तु विशेषज्ञाः | अत्र परिशील्य दोषाः एव उच्यन्ते | समीकर्तुं वा न इति निश्चयः भवतः इच्छा | अन्येषाम् अभिप्रायं निशम्य आगन्तुं वा न इति निश्चयं कर्तुं शक्नोति किल | किमपि अनुक्त्वा शिरः अवनमय्य ततः पत्नीं सम्मुखीकर्तुम् प्रसङ्गवशात् प्राज्ञः गृहं निर्गतः | वाहनं स्थिरम् अकम्पमानम् अरूक्षम् यावत् अहम् निरीक्षितवान् तावता उपरि पूर्णचन्द्रमा: प्रकाशते स्म | 

As promised, the vehicle was ready. I went there, paid the cashier with my credit card, took the keys, and was about to leave when the same mechanic looked at me and said, “Sir, to prevent this problem please do oil-changes on time. Also, please don’t think otherwise, why do you take your cars to other mechanics who are less knowledgeable and who can’t clearly know what the problem is? Isn’t the money you spend like the saying, “Penny wise pound foolish?” We are subject matter experts here. We examine and tell you the faults. To fix or not is your choice. You can take other opinions and decide to come here, can’t you not?” Without saying anything I shook my head and left to face my wife, gaining wisdom from my experience. By the time I figured the car was steady, not harsh, nor shaking, the full moon was shining above.
