सन्मित्रलक्षणम्

एकदा द्वयोः देशयोः मध्ये किञ्चन घोरं युद्धं समारब्धम् | बहुभ्यः दिनेभ्यः तदीयाः सैनिकाः विरामं विना अयुध्यन्त | तस्मिन् प्रसङ्गे ग्रीष्मकाले एकस्मिन् दिने सूर्यास्तसमयः जातः | श्रान्तः वीरसिंहः नाम कश्चन् योधः लक्षितवान् यत् विक्रान्ताः रिपुसैनिकाः अस्मत्सैनिकानां चमूम् आक्रम्य शनैः शनैः अग्रे सरन्ति इति | एवं परिस्थितिं परिशील्य तेषां सेनापतिः अपि उच्चस्वरेण सशब्दम् उद्घोषितवान्, “शत्रवः निरायासाः अस्मान् आक्रामन्ते, जेतारः इति दृश्यते च अतः अस्माभिः प्रतिनिवर्तनं कर्तव्यम्” इति |

Once there started a ghastly war between two nations. For many days their warriors fought without a break. In that incident, one summer day it was sunset. A tired fighter Virasimha perceived that the brave enemy soldiers having attacked our army were slowly advancing. Examining the situation, their army chief also loudly proclaimed, “The enemies are tirelessly attacking us and appear victorious, therefore, let us retreat.”

तस्य सुहृत् युद्धसंभ्रमात् परिभ्रष्टः स्यात् इति विचिन्त्य वीरसिंहः इतस्ततः पश्यन् मित्रस्य अन्वेषणं कुर्वन् आसीत् | अन्ते सः सेनापतिं उपेत्य उक्तवान् “रामचन्द्रः कुत्रापि न दृश्यते, सः शत्रुहतः इति मम महती भीतिः अस्ति | तस्यानवेषणार्थं शत्रुपक्षं अहं गन्तुं सिद्धः अस्मि | कृपया अङ्गीकरोतु” | इति | योधाः युद्धक्षेत्रे भूमिं खनन्तः गर्तान् विनिर्माय युद्ध्यन्ते स्म | सेनापतिना उक्तम् “वस्तुतः युद्धे बहुभिः मरणं प्राप्यन्ते परन्तु तत्र तस्याम् उपाकुल्यां इतोऽपि बहवः जनाः मृताः सन्ति | तेषु महागर्तेषु एकस्मिन् गर्ते प्रायः त्वदीयं मित्रं अपि शस्त्रप्रहारेण व्रणं प्राप्य वा भूम्यां शयनम् अस्ति अथवा यमलोकं प्राप्नोत् | यदि तत्र गच्छे: तर्हि तव मरणं निश्चयं अतः तवगमने मम अनुमतिः नास्ति |

My friend appears to be lost in the confusion from the battle and thinking so Virasimha was looking here and there searching for his friend. In the end he approached the leader and said, “Ramachandra is nowhere to be seen and my great fear is he is struck by the enemies. The warriors digging in the ground made trenches and fought. The leader said, “It is a fact many die in the battle but in that pit there are more people dead now. In one of those mighty pits your friend is lying on the ground struck by the weapons or having gotten a wound, or has gone to the abode of yama (dead). If you should go there then your death is certain, so you don’t have my permission to go.

युद्धं कुर्वतः सैनिकस्य मनसि तस्य मित्रस्य चिन्तनं विना अन्यत् किमपि न प्रचलितम् आसीत् | अनेन सः मित्रविरहवेदनां सोढुम् अशक्तः सन् सेनापतेः आदेशं परित्यज्य अग्रे रिपुसैनिकचम्वां प्रति गोलिकावृष्टिम् अतिक्रम्य धावितवान् | तत्र सः आयुधप्रहारैः पतितेषु शवेषु रामचन्द्रः कुत्र इति अन्विष्यन् मित्रस्य मुखपरिचयं प्राप्तुं परिशीलनं कृतवान् | “सर्वत्र रक्तमयं दर्शनं लब्ध्वा भीतः सः ईश्वरं प्रार्थितवान्, “मम मित्रं सुरक्षितं भवतु” इति | तदा सः कस्यचित् मृतरिपोः शरीरस्य अधः प्राणरहितसदृशं सुप्तं मित्रं दृष्टवान् |

In the mind of the fighting warrior there were no other thoughts happening other than his friend’s. In any event, unable to tolerate the pain of separation from his friend, he rejected the chief’s order and ran towards the enemy’s army, crossing the rain of bullets. There, he was searching the faces of the fallen corpses struck by the weapons to identify who was Ramachandra amongst them. Seeing the bloody sight everywhere he prayed to the Lord being frightened, “Let me friend be safe.” Then he saw, under an enemy’s dead body, his lifeless sleeping friend’s body.

किञ्चित् कालानन्तरं सेनापतिः धावन्तं वीरसिंहं तस्य स्कन्धे लम्बमानं मित्रं च अवलोक्य कुपितः सन् निन्दितुं आरभत | “मया बहुवारम् आज्ञयाप्तं तथापि त्वया आदेशभङ्गः कृतः | त्वदीयः स्नेहितः मृतः इति मया पूर्वमेव उक्तम् अतः तव प्रयासः व्यर्थः सञ्जातः | चम्वै तव साहाय्यं अत्यन्तं मुख्यं इति त्वं जानासि ननु | वृथाकारणेन किमर्थं प्राणत्यागसदृशं कार्यं कुर्यात्?” इति | सैनिकः तस्मै प्रत्युत्तरं दत्तवान् “सेनापते! भवतः वचनं न उचितम् | समयानुसरेण तत्र गतम् परन्तु मरणात्पूर्वं मम मित्रस्य अन्तिमानि पदानि एवम् - वीरसिंह! अहं निश्चयेन जानामि स्म यत् मदर्थं त्वं आगमिष्यसि एव इति |

After sometime, the chief saw Virasimha running with his friend on his back and becoming angry began to rebuke him, “I instructed you many times and yet you disobeyed. Your friend is dead and your effort is deemed useless. For our army your help is very important and you know it. By this useless effort, why are doing an act equivalent to sacrificing your life? The soldier replied, “Sir, you are wrong. I did go there on time and before my friend died his words were, “Virasimha! I knew for certain that you will come for me.”
