शिबिचक्रवर्तेः त्यागः

पूर्वं शिबि: नाम कश्चन धार्मिकः महाराजः निवसति स्म | सः भूतदयां समाचर्य समग्रां पृथ्वीं परिपालितवान् | एकदा देवाः एतावतः करुणवतः नृपस्य महत्तां श्लाघितवन्तः आसन् | तदा देवेन्द्रः तस्य परीक्षां कर्तुं ऐच्छत् | अतः सः शिबेः परीक्षार्थं श्येनरुपेण मर्त्यलोकं आगन्तुं निश्चितवान् | अग्निदेवः अपि कपोतरूपधृक् जातः |

Long long ago, there was a righteous king named Shibi. He exhibited kindness to all beings and ruled the entire earth. Once, the devas were extolling the glories of Shibi. At that time, Indra desired to test the king. He decided to disguise himself as an eagle and descend the earth to test the king. Agni took the guise of a pigeon.

एकस्मिन् दिने मध्याह्ने शिबिमहाराजः पृथिव्यां यज्ञस्य अनन्तरं सरस्वतीनदीतीरे ब्राह्मणेभ्यः भोजनं परिवेशयन् आसीत् | तदा आकाशे एकः डयमानः श्येनः पलायमानं कञ्चन कपोतम् अनुसृत्य तत्र आगतः | भयाक्रान्तः खिद्यमानः कपोतः नृपस्य उपरि पतित्वा पादौ गृह्णन् शरणम् आश्रितवान् | “भोः राजन्! क्षम्यताम् | अहं जीवितुम् इच्छामि | श्येनात् कृपया त्रायताम् |” इति प्रार्थितवान् |

One midday on Earth, Shibi was serving food to some Brahmins after a sacrifice. Then, an eagle chasing a pigeon went flying to Shibhi. The fearful and distressed pigeon fell on the king, grabbed his feet, and sought shelter. “Oh King, please pardon me. I desire to live. Please protect me from the eagle.” beseeched the pigeon.

शिबिः प्रीतिपूर्वकम् उत्तरितवान् “मा बिभीही | तव रक्षणं मम कर्तव्यम् अतः अहं त्वां रक्षामि” | पक्षपातं कुर्वन्तं राजानं निरीक्षमाणः श्येनः उच्चस्वरेण अपृच्छत् |

“अहं बुभुक्षितः अयं कपोतः मम आहार: च | भवता सः अपहृतः | यदि मया आहारः न लभ्येत तर्हि कथं वा जीवामि? यदि पालयिता भवान् प्रजानां संरक्षणं सम्यक् न करोति तर्हि वयम् कथं वा सुखं अनुभवेम? सस्यानि न वर्धेमहि | वृष्टिः न भवेत् | राज्यं मरुभूमिः भवेच्च |”

The king replied. “Do not fear, protecting you is my duty, so I will protect you.”

“I am hungry and pigeon is my food. You have taken it. If I don’t get my food then how will I live? If you, the protector, don’t look after your subjects properly then how may we all experience happiness? Crops may not grow. It might not rain, and the kingdom may become a desert.” The eagle replied.

कपोतः जीवति इति मया प्रतिश्रुतिः दत्ता | परन्तु ततः श्येनः मरिष्यति | अधुना किं करोमि | इति नृपः चिन्ताग्रस्तः जातः | किञ्चित् कालम् आलोच्य सः श्येनम् एवम् अवदत् “सत्यं एतद्यत् मया तुभ्यं कपोतः न दीयते | परन्तु अहं मम दक्षिणतः ऊरोः किञ्चित् मांसछेदनं करोमि | तक्षितं मांसखण्डं गृहित्वा वयं तुलायां कपोतस्य भारेण मिमीमहे | यदि त्वं तृप्तः तर्हि तन्न्मितं मांसं तव भोजनं भवतु |” इति

The king contemplated, “I had given a promise that the pigeon would live, but consequently, the eagle will die. What do I do now?” After thinking for some time, he told the eagle, “Yes, it is true that I did not give you the pigeon, but I shall cut some meat from the right side of my thigh. Let us take the cut piece of meat and measure it on a scale with the weight of the pigeon. If you are satisfied then let that meat be your food.”

श्येनः नृपस्य प्रस्तावम् अङ्ग्यकरोत् | धीरः शिबिः तस्य प्रतिज्ञानुसारं स्वस्य ऊरोः मांस छित्त्वा मापने स्थापितवान् | परन्तु कपोतभारस्य अपेक्षया कपोतमितं कर्तितं नृपशरीरस्य मांसं अल्पभारम् एव आसीत् | अथ नृपेण ऊरोः वामभागतः मांसं खण्डितम् | तावता महाराजस्य नेत्राभ्यां अश्रूणि पतितानि सन्ति |

श्येनः अश्रुपूर्णं शूरं नृपम् अवदत् “अहं दुःखेन पीडया वा दत्तम् मांसं न अङ्गीकुरोमि | तादृशं भोजनं सर्वथा अतृप्तिकरं स्यात् | इति ”|

शिबिः उक्तवान् “एतानि अश्रूणि सन्तोषेण एव पतितानि न तु खेदेन यतोहि मम शरीरस्य उपयोगः परार्थे न तु स्वार्थे अस्ति |” इति | परन्तु तथापि तुलामितं मांसम् न्यूनम् एव आसीत् | यद्यपि महाराजः पुनःपुनः मांसं शरीरात् छिन्नवान् तथापि परिमितं मांसं कपोतभारेण तुल्यमेव नासीत् | तत्र तिष्ठतां प्रजानां मनांसि आश्चर्यम् |

The eagle accepted the king’s proposal. The brave king, true to his promise, cut the flesh from his thigh and placed it on the balance. But in comparison to the pigeon the king’s meat weighed less. Again,the king cut the meat from his left thigh. At that time, tears fell from the king’s eyes.

The eagle said “I must not accept the meat offered with sadness.”

Shibi responded, “These falling tears are tears of joy but not sadness because my body has become useful for others.”

Yet, the meat measured by the balance was less. Despite cutting the meat several times from his body it was still less than the weight of the pigeon.The subjects standing there were wonderstruck.

अथ तस्य राज्ञः रक्तमये त्वग्रहिते शरीरे अस्थीनि तत्र तत्र दृश्यमाननि सन्ति | “राजन्! भवान् प्रतिज्ञाभङ्गं कुर्वन् अस्ति | एतादृशी प्रकृतिः महाजनेषु अनुचिता | “इति श्येनः प्रकुप्य तर्कितवान् | यद्यपि महाराजः वैफल्येन उपायशून्यः तथापि तस्य आत्मविश्वासस्य च्युतिः नैव जाता |

नृपः चिन्तितवान् “वस्तुतः कपोतः लघुपक्षी तथापि मया कर्तितं मांसं अपर्याप्तं सञ्जातम् | तत् कथं स्यात्? एषः तु निश्चयेन आश्चर्यभूतः विषयः |”

In the bloodied and skinless body of the king bones appeared here and there. The eagle getting irritated said, “Oh King! You are breaking your promise. This type of character is not worthy of the great.” Even though the king was clueless, after his fruitless effort, there was no diminution in his resolve.

The king thought, “It is true that the pigeon is a small bird, but despite that the meat I cut is not enough. How is that possible? This is certainly a cause for wonder.”

अनन्यगतिकया स महान् नरः स्वयमेव तुलां आरुह्य तस्य संपूर्णं देहं श्येनाय समर्प्य आश्रयतः कपोतस्य जीवनं संरक्षितवान | अकस्मात् कपोतश्येनौ अदृष्यौ भूत्वा सर्वेषां पुरतः दृष्टिगोचरौ नास्ताम् | आकाशात् नृपतिं सम्मानयितुं पुष्पवृष्टि: पतिता | पक्षिवेषधारिणौ देवेन्द्राग्नी च तयोः गुप्तवेषौ प्रक्षिप्य प्रत्यक्षभूतौ जातौ | तौ शिबिं अनुगृह्य तस्य व्रणितं शरीरं प्रकित्य निजशरीरं प्रादत्ताम् | देवाः शिबेः त्यागगुणान् कीर्तितवन्तः | देवेन्द्रः अवदत् “भवान् करुणामयः प्रजावत्सलः धर्मात्मा सर्वोत्तमः नृपः इति निस्सन्देहं सर्वेभ्यो घोषयामि | राजेन्द्र! गच्छ ! विश्वं जय पालय च | तव शासने सर्वे जनाः सुखिनो भवन्तु इति मम आशिष: |”इति | ततः देवाः स्वस्थानं निर्गतवन्तः |

With no options left, the great man climbed onto the scales, offered himself completely to the eagle and saved the pigeon seeking shelter. Suddenly, in front of everyone, the eagle and the pigeon disappeared. A shower of flowers fell from the sky honoring the king. Agni and Indra dressed as birds discarded their disguises and revealed themselves. They blessed Shibi, healed his wounds, and restored his body to his original self. Indra said, “Oh King of kings! You are benevolent, loved by your people, a righteous soul, and best amongst men which I declare to all without any doubts. Son, go, conquer the world, and rule it. By your rule let everyone be happy and those are my blessings!” After, the devas left for their abodes.
