एकदा वराहशर्मन् नाम्ना कश्चन ब्राह्मणः निवसति स्म | कश्चित् श्रेष्ठी यज्ञानान्तरं तस्मै मनोहरं वृषभशिशुं अयच्छत् | वत्सेन नन्दीविशालः इति नाम प्राप्तम् | ब्राह्मणः प्रतिदिनं प्रीत्या क्षीरं तृणं च दत्त्वा तस्य पालनं कुर्वन् जीवनं यापयति स्म | किञ्चित् कालपर्यन्तं तर्णकः संवर्ध्य बलवान् वृषभः सञ्जातः | वृषभः चिन्तितवान् “स्वामिना मम पालनम् मातापितृभ्यां समं कृतम् | अतः यथा पुत्रः पितरं प्रीणयेत् तथा अहमपि तस्य प्रीतिः ऐश्वर्येण वा सम्पत्त्या तस्मै प्रतिददामि” इति | वृषभेण हार्दभावेन उक्तम् “भगवन्! कञ्चन श्रेष्ठिनं प्राप्य एनम् आक्षिकपणं करोतु | मम वृषभः शतं भारपूरितान् शकटान् आक्रष्टुं शक्नोति | करोति चेत् सहस्रसुवर्णनाणकानि भवता दातव्यानि” इति | इति |”

Once, there lived a Brahman by the name Varaha Sharma. A certain rich man gave the brahmin a charming calf after a yagnya. The calf received the name “Nandi Vishala.” Everyday, raising him with love the Brahmin gave the calf milk and grass and spent his life. After some time the calf grew well into a strong bull. The bull thought, master has raised me as parents do so I shall reciprocate his love with opulence and wealth. The bull spoke lovingly, “Lord, find a rich man and make this bet. My bull can pull a hundred load carts. If he does, then you should give me 1000 gold coins.”

ब्राह्मणः आश्चर्यान्वितः चिन्तितवान् “मम वृषभः वक्तुं शक्नोति इति भाति” इति | नन्दीविशालः अवदत् “भवता स्वप्नः न दृष्टः | भवान् यत् शृण्वन् अस्ति मम वचनं तत् तु सत्यमेव |” इति | वराहशर्मा विश्वसिति स्म | अनेन सः ग्रामस्य सर्वोत्तमेषु धनिकेन सह मिलितवान् गम्भीरस्वरेण उक्तवान् च | “प्रभो अस्मिन् ग्रामे सर्वेषु वृषभेषु कस्य वृषभः बलवत्तमः?” इति | श्रेष्ठिना उक्तं, “वस्तुतः अस्माकं ग्रामे अनेके बलवन्तः वृषभाः सन्ति न संशयः परन्तु तेषु ममैव तु शक्तितमः” इति | ब्राह्मणः तर्कितवान् “मम वृषभः शतं भारयुक्तान् शकटान् नेतुमर्हति | भवतः वृषभाः इतोप्यधिकं कर्तुं साधयन्ति किम्” इति | हसता धनिकेन उक्तम् “परिहासं करोति खलु? तर्हि आक्षिकपणं कर्तुम् इच्छामि यत् तत् असाध्यं कार्यम् |” इति | ब्राह्मणः उच्चस्वरेण उत्तरितवान् “भद्र सत्यमिदम् | वस्तुतः मम वृषभः अन्यवृषभाः इव दृश्यते | परन्तु एषः विशिष्टः एव | भवन्तं दर्शयामि च | येन विजयं न प्राप्स्यते सः अन्यस्मै सहस्रसुवर्णनाणकानि दद्यात् | धनिकः तस्य प्रस्तावम् अङ्ग्यकरोत् |

The brahmin being amazed thought, “It appears that my bull can speak?” Nandivishala said, “You have not dreamt. What you have been hearing are my words for sure.” Varaha Sharma believed. In that manner he met the richest man in the village and spoke with a deep voice. “Lord, in this village whose bull is the strongest?” The rich man said, “It is a fact that there are many strong bulls here no doubt but of them mine is the strongest.” The brahmana logically added, “My bull is capable of pulling 100 loaded carts. Can your bulls achieve more than this?” The rich man laughing said “Are you joking? Then I am willing to bet that this is impossible.The brahmin believing spoke loudly, “Sir this is true. It is a fact that my bull looks like other bulls. Yet mine is special. I shall show you. Whoever loses he should give the other 1000 gold coins. The rich man accepted his proposal.

ब्राह्मणः सन्ध्यासमये उत्थाय नन्दीविशालं स्नातुं नदीं नयति स्म | तत्र शते शकटेषु शिलाखण्डान् सिकताः च अन्यान् ग्रावान् पूरयन् सः नन्दीविशालं शकटस्य अग्रभागे बद्ध्वा गन्तुं सिद्धः आसीत् | वराहशर्मा चिन्तयन् आसीत् “अहं सुवर्णनाणकानि लब्ध्वा तेन धनेन यथेष्टं वस्तूनि क्रेतुं शक्नोमि | इतोऽपि वृषभान् प्राप्य ग्रामस्य श्रेष्ठतमः धनिकः भविष्यामि | सेवमानाः ग्रामीणाः सर्वे मम पुरतः शिरांसि अवनम्य “प्रभो किम करोम्यहम्” इति प्रक्ष्यन्ति |” इति | एवं तस्मिन् मनसि कामसहितं चिन्तनं प्रविष्टम् | तदनुसारेण विप्रस्य वर्धमानया इच्छाशक्त्या विवेकशक्तिः आच्छादिता जाता |

The Brahmin woke at dawn and took Nandi Vishala to the river for a bath. There, filling 100 carts with rocks, sand, and gravel stones he was ready to start after tying Nandi Vishala to the front part of the cart. Varaha Sharma was thinking, “I will get the gold coins and buy a lot of stuff. I shall buy more bulls and be the richest man in the village. All the serving villagers will bow before me and ask “SIr what can I do for you?” Thus, desire filled thoughts entered his mind. In that manner the brahmin’s discriminating powers were overcome by his growing desires.

यदा मन्दमारुतः वहन् आसीत् तदा चटकाः कूजन्तः तत्र | धनिकः तरोः अधः उपविश्य आगतौ ब्राह्मणवृषभौ पश्यन् आसीत् | तदानीं “रे शीघ्रं शकटान् आकर्ष | अलस! किं करोषि ? मूढ! किमर्थं तूष्णीं तिष्ठन् असि?” इति उन्मत्तः सन् ब्राह्मणः उच्चैः नन्दीविशालं निन्दितवान् | ब्राह्मणस्य बाधमानैः वचनैः नन्दीविशालः दुर्बलः इव स्तब्धः जातः | किञ्चित्कालपर्यन्तं सोऽपि कुपितः सन् विरोधेन शकटान् आक्रष्टुं शक्नुवन् अपि मौनं प्रकटयन् नावहत् | ब्राह्मणस्य मुखं विवर्णं जातम् | किमर्थं मम वचनं न अङ्गीकृतम् इति मन्यमानः सः व्याकुलः अभवत् | ब्राह्मणेन पणे हानिः प्राप्ता | धनिकः हर्षयन् विप्रात् सर्वं धनं गृहीतवान् |

When a mind breeze was flowing sparrows were chirping. The rich man sat under a tree and was seeing the brahmin and bull who had come. At that time, “Hey pull the cart quickly! Lazybones what are you doing? Rascal, why are you standing silent ?” Like this, being intoxicated, the brahmin scolded Nandi Vishala. By the brahmin’s harassing words Nandi Vishala froze as though he was powerless. After some time he too got angry and rebelled by not pulling the card even though he was capable of pulling. The brahmin’s face lost color. Thinking “Why has he not followed my instruction ?” he was confused. The brahmin lost the bet. The rich man laughingly took all the money from the Brahmin.

रात्रौ आगते ब्राह्मणः पीडितः सन् शय्यायां प्रबुद्धः आसीत् | तस्मिन्नेव समये नन्दीविशालः अपि स्वामिनं साहाय्यं कर्तुं इच्छन् कुटीरस्य वातायनेन मुखं दर्शितवान् | तेन उक्तं, “स्वामिन् किमर्थं चिन्तामग्नः भवान् ?” इति | विप्रः सविषादं उक्तवान् “पीड्यमानेन मया किं वक्तव्यम् ? धनिकः सर्वं धनम् अपहृतवान् | द्युतकारोऽपि भवाम्यहम् | धनं विना कथं जीवितव्यम्?” इति | क्षणं विरम्य वृषभः प्रत्युत्तरितवान् “देव! भवान् पुत्रवत् मां पालयति स्म | यदा कदापि कमपि अहं शिरसा अताडयम्? अथवा गृहे कञ्चन घटभग्नं अकरवम् ? न | तर्हि किमर्थं कठोरवचनेन मूढ! अलस! इति माम् आहूतवान् ?” | दोषान् अवगच्छन् ब्राह्मणः वृषभम् आलिङ्ग्य प्रीतिपपूर्वकम् अवदत् “न वत्स कदापि न | हे वृषभोत्तम त्वं तु मम विनयसंपन्नः उत्तमपुत्रः | सदातृप्तः प्रसन्नः समर्थोऽपि च” | ममैव सर्वः दोषः क्षन्तव्योऽहम् |

When night fell the brahmin, pained, was awake in his bed. At the same time, Nandi Vishala, also wanting to help the brahmin, showed his face through the hut’s window. He spoke, “Master, why are you worried?” The brahmin feeling sad said, “With the pain that I am in what can I say? The rich man has taken all my money. I have also become a gambler. How can we live without money?” After a few moments the bull responded, “Sir, you have raised me as a son. Have I ever gored anyone? Or else have I ever broken a pot ? No. Then why did you call me with harsh words such as Rascal or Lazybones?” The brahmin realizing his mistake lovingly hugged the bull and spoke, “No dear never. O best amongst bulls, you are full of humility and my best son. You are ever satisfied, pleasant, and very capable. It is my fault so please forgive me.”

एतदभ्यन्तरे चतुरः वृषभः विप्रं सान्त्वयित्वा वक्तुं आरब्धवान् “भगवन् सर्वं तु न नष्टम् | पुनः गच्छतु | श्रेष्ठिना सह पुनः सम्मिल्य अन्यं पणं करोतु | परन्तु निक्षेपधनं वर्धताम् | द्विसहस्रसुवर्णनाणकानि क्रियताम् | अपि च यत् जातं भवतु नाम | शृणोतु कदापि मां कठोरवचसा मा आह्वयतु | एतद्वारं परस्परं विजयं प्राप्नुयाव |” इति | वराहशर्मा वृषभं मधुरवचनैः संश्रुत्य श्रेष्ठिनं मेलितुं गतवान् | विस्मितः धनिकः विप्रम् उक्तवान् | “पुनः? धनक्षयेनापि बुद्धिः न प्राप्ता ? अस्तु करवाव | धनं तु अहमेव प्राप्स्यामि” इति |

In the meantime the clever bull pacified the Brahmin and began speaking. “Sir, not all is lost. Go again. Meet with the rich man and make another bet. But increase the stakes. Please make it 2000 gold coins. Also, let what happened go. Please listen and never call me such harsh words. This time we shall succeed. Varaha Sharma promised with sweet words and went to meet the rich man. The surprised rich man spoke to the Brahmin. Another bet? With your money lost didn’t you not gain intelligence? Ok let us have it. After all, I am going to get the money.

अन्यस्मिन्दिने यदा शतशकटैः नन्दीविशालः नियुक्तः आसीत् तदा ब्राह्मणः मधुरस्वरेण एवं प्रार्थितवान्, “वृषभेषु शक्तितम! | शकटान् गृहीत्वा आकर्ष | त्वं न करोषि चेत् प्रपञ्चेऽस्मिन् कोऽपि नार्हः |” इति | नन्दीविशालः मन्दहासं कुर्वन् यथा श्रीकृष्णः परिश्रमेण विना कनिष्टिकया गोवर्धनगिरिं उन्नीतवान् तथा सोऽपि भारयुक्तान् शकटान् सुलभतया अचालयत् | यदा वहता वृषभेन शकटाः आकृष्टाः तदा धनिकः मुखं उद्घाट्य चक्षुषी उन्मीलियन् च एकैकशं गच्छन्तं तान् अविश्वासेन अपश्यत् | धनिकः तस्य पराजयं अङ्ग्य्करोत् | “भवान् एतानि द्विसहस्रसुवर्णनाणकानि प्राप्तुमर्हः न संशयः | अतः कृपया स्वीकरोतु |” इत्यवदत् धनिकः | यद्यपि अस्मात् प्रसङ्गात् वराहशर्मा धनिकः अभवत् तथापि धर्मं बोधयतः वृषभात् सः नीतिपूर्वकं जीवनं गर्वेण विना कथं कर्तव्यम् इति अवगतवान् |

Another day when Nandi Vishala was yoked to a 100 carts th Brahmin requested. “Oh strongest amongst the bulls, Grab onto the carts and pull. If you can't, no one in this Universe can. Nandivishala smiled and just like how Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan hill with his little finger without any effort, he moved the 100 carts with ease. When the bull was pulling the loaded carts , the rich man saw them with his mouth and eyes wide open beyond belief. The rich man accepted his defeat. You deserve the 2000 gold coins no doubt said the Brahmin. Even though from this incident Varaha Sharma became rich, yet he understood “How can I lead a righteous life” from his bull teaching dharma.”
