वानराणां सरोवरराक्षसस्य च कथा

एकदा कश्चन वानरसमूहः नगरपर्यन्तं आगत्य वनप्रदेशात् बहिः वासम् अकरोत् | तेषां नायकः वानरान् आहूय सरोवरसमीपे उपविशतः तान् वानरान् आदिशत् | “हे वानराः! सावधानेन शृण्वन्तु | द्वौ मुख्यविषयौ | अत्र अनेकानि विषमयानि फलानि सन्ति | केचन पिशाचाः अपि सरोवरेषु प्रतिसञ्चरन्ति | मम प्रश्नकरणात् पूर्वं जलं मा पिबेयुः फलानि मा खादेयुः च |” इति

Once a certain group of monkeys came to the outskirts of a forest dwelled there. Their leader called all the monkeys near the lake and instructed those sitting monkeys. "Oh Monkeys! Listen carefully. Two important pieces of information. Here there are many poisonous fruits. Some ghosts also haunt this lake. Prior to asking me you may not drink water or eat." In this manner.

एकस्मिन् दिने वसन्तकालसमये यदा कपयः काष्ठान् सङ्गृह्णन्ति स्म तदा ते गभीरे अरण्यमध्ये बहुदूरं प्राविशन् | अथ चलनाधिकात् एकः वानरशिशुः श्रान्तः पिपासितः सन् मातासमीपं गतवान् | तत्र समीपस्थं सरोवरं अवलोक्य माता रुदन्तं शिशुं आनीतवती | “वत्स! रोदनं मास्तु | अत्रैव जलं पिब” इति अम्बा हार्दभावेन शिशुं सुशान्तिम् अकरोत् | तावता तत्र पश्यता अन्यवानरेण उक्तम् “भोः मा पिबतु | अस्माकं नायकस्य प्रत्यादेश: स्मर्यते किम् ? प्रथमं तम् आह्वयाम |” इति |

One day during spring time when the monkeys were collecting wood they wandered long and deep into the forest. Now because of walking a lot a monkey baby being tired and thirsty went near his mother. There the mom having looked at the nearby lake brought the crying child. "Child don't cry. Drink water here," saying so the mom pacified the child with kind heartedness. A monkey watching this nearby said, "Oh don't drink. Do you remember our leader's warning?" First, let us call him.

नायकः आगत्य सर्वं श्रुतवान् | “उचितकार्यं कृतम् | सरोवरं परिशीलयामि अहं च इत्युक्त्वा सः सरोवरतटं प्रतिगतवान् | वस्तुतः अत्र बहूनि पादचिह्नानि दृश्यन्ते यानि सरोवरदिक्भागं गच्छन्ति परन्तु एकमपि बहिः न आगच्छति इति अवगत्य सः अवदत् “अत्र जलं मा पानीयम् | कश्चन राक्षसः अस्य सरोवरस्य आक्रमणं कृत्वा प्रतिवसति इति मन्ये | चिन्तयामि किं कुर्याम” इति |

The leader came and listened to everything. "You have done a good thing. I will examine the lake," saying so he went to the banks of the lake. The fact a lot of footprints can be seen that go in the direction of the lake but not one is coming out. Having understood so he said, "We can't drink water here. Some demon has attacked this lake and lives here I think. Let me think what we ought to do."

एतदभ्यन्तरे कश्चित् भयङ्करः उग्ररूपः राक्षसः तत्र आगत्य सरोवरतरङ्गानां मध्ये तिष्ठन् अगर्जयत् | “अत्र किं कुर्वन्ति? जीवनस्य इच्छा अस्ति चेत् सरोवरस्य अन्तः मा प्रविशेयुः | अथवा ये प्रविशन्ति ते भवन्ति मम मध्याह्नभोजनम् | चतुरेण वानरप्रमुखेन उक्तम् “यद्यपि वयम् अन्तः न प्रविशेम तथापि संशयेन विना जलं पास्यामः | कथम् इति पृच्छति स्यात् पश्यतु” इति |

In the meantime a scary and angry demon having come and roarded standing on the waves of the lake. "What are you doing here? If you are desirous of your life then you may not enter the lake. Otherwise those who enter become by midday meal," said the demon. The intelligent monkey leader said, "Even though we may not enter the lake we will drink it without a doubt. If you might ask how, watch."

वानरनायकः पश्यतः वानरान् उद्दिश्य वदति स्म “सर्वे माम् अनुसरन्तु | प्रथमं पार्श्वे वर्धमानान् वेणुदण्डान् सङ्गृह्य अत्र आनयन्तु | ततः परम् तान् योजयन्तु” इति | तदनुसारेण तेषां युक्तेन एका नाडी सुदीर्घा जाता | वानरैः सर्पसदृशी सा नाडी जले स्थापिता यत्र भ्रान्तः राक्षसः कुतूहलेन पश्यन् आसीत् |

The leader spoke to the watching monkeys. "All of you follow me. First collect the bamboo shoots growing nearby and bring them here. Then join them. In that manner by yoking them a long pipe was formed. The monkeys placed the snake-like pipe in the water where the confused demon was watching with curiosity.

यः नाडीभागः भूमौ आसीत् तस्यान्ते वानरनायकः उपविश्य श्वासबलेन चोषणम् आरभत | किञ्चित् कालः अतीतः | अकस्मात् वायुशक्तिकारणेन सरोवरजलं नाड्याम् वहन् नायकस्य पुरतः पतित्वा जलधारा जाता | पिपासिताः म्लानवदनाः वानराः उच्चैः आक्रुश्य तस्मिन् एव जले अपतन् | यावत् जलं आवश्यकं तावत् पीत्वा तृष्णां निर्वाप्य बुद्धिमन्तं वानरपतिं सम्मानयन्ति स्म | आनन्दरहितं तं राक्षसं उद्दिश्य सर्वे नृत्यन्तः वानराः उपहासं प्रकट्ट्य गृहं गतवन्तः |

The leader sat and sucked deeply the portion of the pipe which was on land. Some time passed. Suddenly, due the force of breath water began flowing on the pipe and upon falling in front of the leader it formed a small pool. The thirsty and tired-faced monkeys screamed loudly and fell on that pool. Upon quenching their thirst with what was necessary they honored their leader. On seeing the disappointed demon all the dancing monkeys mocked him and returned home.
