महाराज-वानरकथा

कस्मिंश्चित् राज्ये एक: नृप: वसति स्म | कश्चन वानरः कार्यमोहः नाम्ना आसीत् | नृपस्य तस्मिन् वानरे बहु प्रीतिः आसीत् अतः सः वानरः राज्ञा अनुमत्या राजभवने सर्वत्र गन्तुं शक्यते स्म | कदाचित् महाराजेन सह अन्तःपुरे कदलीफलनि द्राक्षाणि इत्यादीनि यथेष्टम् खादितानि | अन्यसमये सः उद्याने अत्यन्तं सुखम् अनुभूय व्याहरत् अथवा प्रासादस्य प्रकोष्ठेषु कालं यापयति स्म |

In some kingdom there lived a king. A monkey by the name of Karyamoha also lived. The king liked the monkey a lot so he gave permission for the monkey to go anywhere in the kingdom. Sometimes the monkey ate bananas, grapes, etc to his content with the king in his inner chambers. Other times he roamed in the garden experiencing a lot of joy or spent time in the palace rooms.

एकदा व्यस्तदिवसात् अनन्तरं मध्याह्ने राजा शय्यायां प्रसारितः आसीत् | श्रान्तः अपि च | तस्य स्नेहितः सः वानरः राज्ञः शयनगृहं प्रविश्य व्यजनं गृहीत्वा वीजनं कर्तुं आरभत | शीतेन वायुना उपशान्तः राजा निद्राशीलः जातः | क्षणमात्रेण सः निद्रावशात् स्वप्नलोकं प्राविशत् |

One afternoon after a busy day the king was lying down on his bed. He was tired as well. His friend the monkey entered the bedroom, took a fan, and began fanning the king. By the cool air the king who was relaxed felt drowsy. Within minutes he entered the dream state.

एतदभ्यान्तरे एका मक्षिका अन्तः प्रविष्टा | कार्यमोहाय मक्षिका न रोचते | तां दृष्ट्वा क्रुध्रः च सः व्यजनं क्षिप्त्वा नृपस्य खड्गं गृहीतवान् | मक्षिकाम् अनुसृत्य खड्गप्रहारणं अकरोत् | यदा यदा मक्षिका इतस्ततः डयमाना आसीत् तदा तदा चञ्चलत्वेन वानरः वस्तुभ्यः वस्तूनि प्रकूर्द्य मक्षिकावधं कर्तुं अयतत | मक्षिका सुप्तनृपस्य शरीरे उपाविशत् | मक्षिकाग्रहणस्य विफलतया वानरः कृद्रः कुपितः च सन् नृपस्य वक्षः स्थले प्राहरत् | तीक्ष्णेन खड्गेन नृपस्य हृदयम् अर्धभागः कृतः | मूर्खः नृपः निद्रावस्थायां एव मृतः |

In the meantime a fly entered. Karyamoha did not like the house-fly. On seeing it, the angry monkey threw away the fan and picked up the king’s sword. He began chasing the fly and striking the sword. As and when the fly kept flying from here to there the monkey due to its fickle minded nature jumped, chased the fly, and kept running. The fly then sat on the king. Due to failure the monkey being irritated and angry struck at the king’s chest. The king's heart split into two. The foolish king died in his sleep.
