महान् आसन्दः लोभी मनुष्यः च कथा

कस्मिंश्चित् प्रदेशे रोमहर्षः नाम एकः वणिक् वसति स्म | वैश्यः सः लोहवस्तूनि विक्रीय धनं सम्पादितवान् | एकदा सः व्यापारार्थम् देशान्तरं गन्तुं उद्यतः आसीत् | गमनपूर्वं च सः मित्रस्य गृहं गत्वा तस्य द्वारं ताडयति स्म | तस्य स्नेहितः लोभनाथः नाम श्रेष्ठी चर्मव्यापारं अकरोत् | रोमहर्षः अपृच्छत्, “भोः श्रेष्ठिन् इदानीं मम प्रवासगमनसमयः | गृहे कोऽपि न च | रिक्ते गृहे चोराः आगच्छेयुः इति मत्वा मयि अत्यन्तं भयं उत्पन्नं अतः धनरक्षणार्थं भवतः साहाय्यम् इच्छामि | एतानि सुवर्णनाणकानि भवतः सविधे निक्षेपणरुपेण संस्थाप्य व्याकुलतया विना गन्तुं इच्छामि” | मित्रम् अङ्ग्यकरोत् | तदनुसारेण रोमहर्षः श्रेष्ठिनः गृहे धनं निधाय विदेशं गतवान् |

In a certain town there lived a merchant whose name was Romaharsha. As a merchant he sold equipment made of iron and earned his money. Once, he was ready to depart to a different country for business. Before leaving, he went to his friend’s house and knocked on his door. His friend Lobhanath was also a trader who dealt with skin trade. Romaharsha asked, “Sir, it is now time for me to travel. There is no one at home. In an empty house thieves may come and thinking so I am very afraid so I need your help to protect my money. I would like to leave these gold coins with you as a deposit and desire to go without any anxiety.” The friend accepted. In that manner Romaharsha left the money at his friend’s house and went abroad.

दीर्घकालपर्यन्तं वणिक् देशान्तरात् स्वनगरं प्रतिनिवर्तते स्म | परेद्यवि उषःकाले यदा सूर्य: उद्गच्छन् आसीत् तदा मित्रमिलनं जातम् | रोमहर्षेण पृष्टं, “भोः मित्र सर्वं कुशलम् ? एतावतपर्यन्तं भवता रक्षितं धनं स्वीकर्तुम् इच्छामि | धनलोभः उक्तवान् “अरे अभ्यागत किमिदं वचनम् ? सर्वधनस्य प्रत्यपर्णं तदानीम् एव कृतम्" | दुराचारः लोभी च सः लोभनाथः | तस्य अन्येषां द्रविणस्य आसक्तिः आसीत् | संवादस्य संम्भ्रमात् कोलाहलम् उत्पन्नं | रोमहर्षः आक्रोशत्, “रे रे नराधम! असत्यवादिन् धैर्यं अस्ति चेत् एतानि वाक्यानि न्यायाकाधिरिणः पुरतः वदतु |” अथ ताभ्यां सह जिज्ञासवः जनाः न्यायालयम् अनुसृतवन्तः |

After some time, returned back from the foreign country to his hometown. The next day at dawn when the sun was rising, the friends met. Romaharsha asked “Oh friend, is everything fine? I desire to take back the money protected by you till now.” Dhanalobha said, “Oh Guest! What is all this talk? I had already returned your money.” Lobhanath was greedy and a person of bad character. He had an interest in the wealth of others. Their conversation resulted in a confusion and soon developed into a loud quarrel. Romarhasha shouted, “Oh worst amongst men, liar! If you are brave, say these words in front of lawyers.” Soon, along with the two aa curious crowd followed them to the court.

न्यायालये न्यायाधिकारिभिः तु विचित्राः नियमाः आचरिता: | तत्र अद्भुतः कश्चन महान् आसन्दः स्थितः आसीत् यस्मिन् मनुष्याः आश्रयणम् अकुर्वन् | आसन्दः न्यायं संस्थापयत् च | तस्य दक्षिणे भागे एकः तीक्ष्णखड्गः अपि प्रतिनिबद्धः आसीत् | आसन्दः सूक्ष्मतया मत्या तस्मिन् उपविष्टः अपराधिनः सत्यवतायाः परीक्षाम् अकरोत् | यदि साक्ष्यम् असत्यं भवति तर्हि आसन्दः असत्यवदिनः स्थापितं हस्तं तीक्ष्णेन खड्गेन विदारणं करोति | वस्तुतः बहूनां दुष्कृतीनां पापचारिणां स्तेनानां च हस्ता: खड्गप्रहारेण विदीर्णाः जाताः |

At the court strangely enough the lawmakers practed a strange set of rules. There, stood a certain great and amazing chair in which men took shelter. The chair meted justice as well. On its right side was a sharp sword tethered to the chair. The chair with its subtle intellect examined the veracity of criminals who sat on it. If the confession was untruthful, then the chair cut and split the hands of the lying confessor. In fact, the hands of numerous evildoers, criminals, and thieves have been severed by the strike of the sword.

प्रथमम् अधिकारिणः आसन्दे रोमहर्षं उपावेशयत् | सः उक्तवान् “तेन मम सर्वं धनं अपहृतम् | प्रतिदातव्यम् च" | आसन्दः खद्गप्रहारणं न अकरोत्" | अनन्तरं अधिकारी धनलोभं उपगम्य उपवेष्टुं आह्वयत् | "भद्र! कृपया मम दण्डं गृह्णातु” इति लोभनाथः रोमहर्षं उक्त्वा आसन्दे उपाविशत् ततः उक्तवान् च |“अहं सर्वं धनं तस्मै प्रतिददामि स्म” | आसन्देन तूष्णीं स्थितम् | धनलोभः मन्दहासं कृत्वा रोमहर्षात् दण्डं गृहीतवान् | तत्र वर्तमानाः जनाः विस्मिताः अभवन् यतः आसन्देन विपर्यायं वचनद्वयम् अङ्गीकृतं | धर्माधिकारिणः विमोहिताः सन्तः तौ अनेकवारम् अपरीक्षन्त परन्तु परिणामः तथैव आसीत् |

The officers first sat Romaharsha on the chair. He spoke, “He has stolen all my money. He should return it.” The chair did not strike its sword. Then, an officer approached Dhanalobha and called him to sit. “Sir, please hold my stick,” said Dhanalobha to Romaharsha, sat on the chair and spoke, “I have returned all the money.” The chair stood silent. The people present there were wonderstruck because the chair was in agreement with opposing statements.” The bewildered officials examined them repeatedly but the results were the same.

तेषु जनेषु मध्ये आसीत् आस्तिका नाम्ना कश्चन ऊर्ध्वकेशः शून्यवादी परिव्राजकमुनिः यः एकाग्रचित्तेन समस्यायाः आलोचनं कुर्वन् आसीत् | योगाभ्यासेन ज्ञानं प्राप्य च सः प्रशान्तमनसा प्रहेलिकायाः उत्तरम् अजानात् | यथा गणपतिभक्ताः नारिकेलम् उन्नीय भूम्यां भञ्जन्ति तथा आस्तिका झटिति लोभनाथस्य हस्तात् दण्डं गृहीत्वा योगबलेन भूमौ क्षिप्तवान् | दण्डस्य भङ्गं अभवत् | भग्नात् दण्डात् निगूहितानि सुवर्णनाणकानि सर्वत्र पतितानि | दण्डस्य अन्तः सुवर्णनाणकानि सः गुप्तिं कृतवान् | तदा सर्वे अवगतवन्तः | अहो! धनलोभस्य वक्रबुद्धिं पश्यन्तु | अन्यबुद्धीनां यथा आसन्दस्य बुद्धेः अपेक्षया मनुष्यबुद्धिः एव सर्वेषां श्रेष्ठतमा इति ज्ञात्वा न्यायाधिकारिणः लोभनाथं कारागृहं प्रेषितवन्तः |

Amongst the people there was Astika, a Buddhist and wandering monk, who was assessing the problem with single minded attention. By the practice of yoga he had acquired knowledge and with his pleasant mind he figured the solution to the problem. Just as how Ganesha devotees lift coconuts and break them on the floor, Astitka quickly grabbed the stick from Dhanalobha and with the force of a yogi and struck it on the floor. From the broken stick fell all the hidden gold coins on the floor. He had hidden all the gold coins inside the stick. Then everyone understood. Oh look at the twisted mind of Dhanalobha. Knowing that compared to all other brains such as the chair’s brain, human intellect alone prevails, the law officials sent Dhanalobha to prison.
