मम वाहनम् कीलितम्

कश्चन लोभी लुब्धः वणिक् | एकदा तस्य मित्रेण सह अरण्यप्रदेशे कारयानं चालयन् आसीत् | यद्यपि बहिर्विन्ध्यापर्वतानां दृश्यं रमणीयं, तथापि वक्रमार्गः इति कारणतः सः महान्तं श्रमम् अनुभवन् आसीत् | वणिजा उक्तं “मित्र! वाहनचालनेन अहं अत्यन्तं श्रान्तः अस्मि | महती शिरोवेदना च | बहिः किञ्चित्कालं विरम्य विश्रान्तिं करवाव किम् ? तथा मूर्ध्नि रक्तप्रवाहः पुनर्लभ्येत |

Once there was a greedy and miserly merchant. Once he was driving a car with his friend by a forest. Even though the “Vindhya Mountain range” was spectacular outside, because of the windy path, he was experiencing a lot of difficulty. He said, “Oh friend! I am very tired from driving. I have a terrible headache as well. Shall we take a break and rest for sometime out here? My blood flow in my head shall be restored

मित्रं प्रत्युत्तरितवान् “वस्तुतः अहमपि निद्रावशा अस्मि | कञ्चित् कालं स्थगयित्वा पाणिपादं प्रसार्य उपविशावः | तत्र पश्यतु विन्ध्यापर्वतानां शिखराणि मनोहराणि सन्ति | मत् भर्जितान् आलुकखण्डान् स्वीकुरु | पिपासां निवारयितुं फलरसं वा जलं गृह्यताम् |

भोजनं सेवामानः विगतबाधः वणिक् सन्तोषेण अवदत् “भर्जितम् आलुकखण्डम् अत्यन्तं रुचिकरम्! धन्यवादः! एतावता मम शिरोवेदना अपि अपगता | अस्माकं मुख्यमेलनं द्वयोः घण्टयोः अनन्तरम् सम्भविष्यति किल! | अतः निर्गच्छाव किम् ? कारयानस्य द्वारं उद्घाटयानि | हा! द्वारं कीलितम् इति दृश्यते | कुञ्चिका कुत्र? |

The friend responded, “In fact I am also sleepy. Let us stretch our hands and legs for sometime and sit. Oh look there! The peaks of the Vindhyas are beautiful. Take some potato chips from me. Take some fruit juice or water also to quench your thirst. The merchant eating the foot and relieved from his pain spoke happily, “fried potato chips are very tasty. Thank you. By this my headache is also gone. Our important meeting is in two hours, right? Shall we start? Let me open the car door. Drat! Looks like the door is locked. Where are the keys?

एवम् कुञ्चिकारहितः रिक्तहस्तः श्रेष्ठी इतस्ततः पश्यन् वाहनस्य अन्तः वीक्ष्य अब्रवीत्, “हन्त! कियद्मूढता | कुञ्चिका आसन्दैव स्थापिता | कीलितेन द्वारेण कथं वा प्रविशेव ? मेलनं! अहो मृतोस्मि” इति | अनन्तरं मित्रं स्यूतम् अन्विष्यन् उच्चैराक्रोशत् “भाग्यवशात् दूरवाणी अत्रैव अस्ति | वाहनस्य कञ्चित् शिल्पिनं गूगल-द्वारा प्रमार्ग्य आह्वयाव |”

Thus, the empty handed and key-less businessman looking here and there peered into the car and spoke. Oh crap! Such foolishness! The keys are kept here. How to get through the locked door? Oh our meeting!!! I am so dead!!! The friend searching the bag loudly shouted, “By providence, the keys are here itself.Let us call a mechanic after searching for him through google.”

वणिक् प्रतिक्षापूर्वकम् आहूतवान् “शिल्पिन्? वाहनस्य शिल्पिन्?” इति |

शिल्पी दुरवाणीग्राहकं उद्धृत्य “आम् तदेव | न तु भवनस्य | कस्तत्र?” इति

वणिक् विवृत्तवान् “मम वाहनं अत्र कुत्रचित् वनप्रदेशे कस्मिंश्चित पथि सन्लग्नम् | कुञ्चिकां वाहनस्य आसन्दे एव निक्षिप्य कीलितवान् | द्वारम् उद्घाटनीयम् | किङ्कर्तव्यतामूढः सन् घोरसूर्यातपे तिष्ठन् अस्मि |” इति |

The merchant expectantly called, “Mechanic? A car mechanic? The mechanic lifted the phone receiver and said “Yah, a car mechanic and certainly not a building artisan, who is there? The merchant explained, “At some forest area on some road my vehicle is stuck. I kept the keys in the carseats and locked the door. The doors ought to be opened. I am standing here in the hot sun like a fool not knowing what to do

शिल्पी उपशमयन् “चिन्ता मास्तु | अहं तत्र आगत्य द्वारम् उद्घाटयिष्यामि | भवतः लग्नस्य स्थानस्य मार्गविवरणं प्रेषणीयम्” इत्यवोचत् |

वणिक् दूरवाण्या उट्टङ्कयन् प्रत्यवदत् “मया दिशः प्रेषिताः | कियद्दूरः तव आपणः ? अत्र वेगेन आगन्तुं शक्ष्यसि किम् ?” इति |

दूरवान्यां शिल्पी “यथाशक्ति वेगेन भविष्यामि किन्तु मम शुल्कं द्विशतं रुप्यकाणि भवति |” इत्यवदत् |

मित्रं अपि उक्तवती “भवतु | झटिति अत्र आगमिष्यसि चेत् तव शुल्कं द्विगुणितं करिष्यावः |” इति |

The mechanic spoke with pacifying words, “No worries. I will come there and open the doors. The location where your car is stuck must be sent.”The merchant typing on his phone said, “ The directions are sent. How far is your shop from here? Can you come soon?” The mechanic on the phone said, “I will be there as fast as I can given my strength. My fees are 200 rupees. The friend responded, “Alright, if you come here fast we will doubt it.”

अर्धघण्टानन्तरम् अपि शिल्पी तत्र न दृश्यते स्म |

कुपितो वणिक् स्वचिन्तनम् आरभत् , “कुत्र गतवान् एषः! समयः अतीतः | धिक् अलस्यवन्तं शिल्पिनम् | आह् ! आगतवान् इति भाति |” इति | “ रे! अत्र आगमने कियन्तं समयं गृहीतवान् | न जानासि कोऽहम् इति ?”

शिल्पी अकथयत् “भगवन्! भवतः स्थानं किञ्चित् दूरम् एव | द्विचक्रिकया आगतवान् किल ?” इति |

मित्रं शिल्पिनं उद्दिश्य “अस्तु शीघ्रं द्वारम् उद्घाटय!” इति |

शिल्पी अनुभवशाली केवलं पञ्चसु निमिषेषु द्वारम् उद्घाटितवान् |

मित्रम् आनन्देन “सम्यक् | अपेक्षितं शुल्कं किमिति उक्तवान् ?” इति |

शिल्पी स्वकार्यसिद्धिं प्राप्य प्रार्थयत् “द्विशतम् | द्विगुणितम् अपि करोति इति उक्तम् |” इति |

The mechanic was nowhere to be seen after half an hour. The angry merchant began thinking, “Where did he go? It is getting late. Shame on the lazy merchant. Oh! Looks like he has come. Hey! How long have you taken to come here? Don’t you know who I am? The mechanic ranted, “Sir! Your place is a little far. I came on a bicycle, didn’t I?” The friend told the mechanic, “Ok, open the door soon.” The mechanic, being experienced, opened the door in mere five minutes.” The friend happily said, “Awesome! What did you say was the fee?”The mechanic, successfully completing his work, requested, “200! You said you’d double it.”

वणिक् सहसा मनः परिवर्त्य शिल्पिनमुद्दिश्य “किम् ? किमिति ? अत्र मूढगणः दृश्यते ? तव आगमनस्य अनन्तरं पञ्चनिमिषा अपि न अभवन् | एतत् चौर्यं यद्मध्याह्ने भवति | तव कार्यस्य अपेक्षितं शुल्कं विंशतिः रुप्यकाणि एव | एतत् स्वीकुरु |”

तादृश उत्तरमनपेक्षितः शिल्पी अतर्कयत् “श्रीमन्! एतत् किम् ? भवान् एव वञ्चकः न त्वहं चोरः | अहं परिश्रमी उद्योगी | पञ्चसु निमिषेषु कार्यं समापयितुम् अहं पञ्चसहस्रवरं अभ्यसितवान् | तत्र मम आपणे अपि ग्राहकाः सन्ति | तान् सर्वान् त्यक्त्वा भवतः साहाय्यार्थम् आगतवान् अस्मि | मम अपेक्षितं धनं कृपया ददातु |”

The merchant quickly changed his mind and told the mechanic, “What? What is it? You think there is a group of fools here? It isn’t even five minutes since you came. This is theft that happens in broad daylight. For your work you only deserve 20 rupees. Take it. Not expecting such an answer, the mechanic argued, “Sir, what is this? You are a cheat and I am not a thief. I am a hardworking worker. To complete in five minutes I have practiced 5000 times. There are customers in my shop. I have left them all and came here to help you. Please give me the money I expect.

वणिक् लुब्धमनः कठोरवचनैः अवदत् “नैव! नैव! | न जानासि चेत् जानीहि कोऽहम् इति | व्यापारविषये मया सह वादः मास्तु | धनं गृहित्वा निर्गच्छ | मम समयं मा व्ययीकुरू | गच्छ! |” इति |

शिल्पिना अकस्मात् वणिजो हस्ततः कुञ्चिका बलेन गृहीता |

शिल्पी अविचलितः पुनः वदितवान् “श्रीमन् | मम अपेक्षितं धनं न दीयते चेत् अहं भवतः कुञ्चिकां न प्रतिदास्यामि | कथम् इतोगच्छति इति पश्याम |”

मित्रम् भर्त्स्यमाना हस्तमुन्नीय शिल्पिनं प्रति “कुञ्चिकां न ददासि चेत् यथा ताडनं करोमि तथा न चलितुं शक्नोषि |” इति |

The greedy merchant spoke harshly, “Never! Never! If you don’t know who I am then please know. Don’t argue with me in business matters. Take the money and depart. Don’t waste my time. Go! ” The keys were suddenly snatched from the merchant’s hands by the mechanic. Undisturbed he spoke, “If you don’t give the sum I expect, I won’t return your keys. Let us see how you will go.” The friend threateningly lifted her hands and spoke, “If you don’t return the keys then I will beat you so bad that you cannot walk.”

अये! रे! इति कलहः प्रवृत्तः | यदा ते युध्यमाना तदा कश्चन मेधावी अनुभवी वृद्धस्तत्र आगतवान् |

वृद्धः कुतूहलतया अपृच्छत् “अयि भोः किम् जातम् ? महान् कोलाहलश्श्रूयते |” इति |

वणिक् दोषारोपयन् “शिल्पिवेषधारी एषः साक्षात् नक्रसदृशो धनग्राहकः |” इति उक्तवान् |

शिल्पी अनङ्गीकृत्य अवदत् “वस्तुतः एषः धनाढ्यः परन्तु महान् कृपणः | मित्यावादी एषो एव वञ्चकः |”

अनन्तरम् उभयोः कथनं श्रुत्वा समादानं प्राप्त्यर्थं प्रतिभावान् वृद्धः किं करणीयं इति अवगच्छन् “मया प्रवृत्तमाना सर्वा घटना श्रुता |” इति ब्रुवन् शिल्पिनः कर्णे किंचित् रहस्यम् अकथयत् | अनन्तरं वणिजं प्रति गतवान् |

Soon a quarrel ensued. While they were fighting, an experienced and intelligent elderly man arrived. He asked with curiosity, “Oh what happened? A big commotion is heard? The merchant finding fault in the mechanic said, “Disguised as a mechanic he is a money grabber like a crocodile.” The mechanic disagreed, “He is factually rich but a great miser. This liar is a cheat.” Soon, after hearing both their accounts the intelligent old man spoke to solve the problem, “I listened to what was happening.” He called the mechanic and whispered something to hsi years. Then he went to the mechanic.

वृद्धः मन्दस्वरेण वक्तुम् आरभत “श्रेष्ठिन् ! भवान् तु कुलीनः | भवतः समीपे अत्यन्तं धनं अपि अस्ति | किमर्थं कारणं विना एतेन सामान्येन वराकेन सह वादः? भवान् वञ्चनां करोति | तस्य प्रतिश्रुतं धनं कृपया समर्पयतु |” इति

“भोः वाचाल वृद्ध! ! अलम् भाषणेन | वणिक्षु अहं सुविख्यातः | अतः वाणिज्यधर्मं वृथा मा बोधयतु | शिल्पिना कार्यं केवलं पञ्चनिमिषेषु समापितम् | कार्यनिमित्तं धनम् यथा दातव्यं तथा समर्पितम् | अहं इतोऽपि एकमपि रूप्यकं न दास्यामि |” इति वणिक् अस्समत्या प्रत्युत्तरितवान् |

The old man spoke softly, “Sir, you are rich. You have a lot of money. Why are you arguing with a wretched commoner for no reason? You are cheating. Please return the money that was promised.” The merchant, disagreeing , replied, “Oh talkative old man. Enough of your speech. I am well known amongst mechanics. Don’t preach the science of business practices to me in vain. The work was completed by the mechanic in five minutes. The money that ought to be given for the work has already been given by me. I will not give a rupee more than this.

वृद्धो हस्तौ प्रसार्य “शिल्पिन्! यत् कर्तव्यं तदेव करणीयम् |” इति संज्ञां अददात् |

शिल्पी वृद्धस्य वचनानुसारं “भवतः एतादृशं दयायुक्तं भिक्षाधनं सर्वथा नैव स्वीकरोमि | विंशतिः रुप्यकाणि प्रतिगृह्णातु |” एवमुक्त्वा वणिजः मुखे धनं प्रक्षिप्तवान् |

शिल्पी सहसा वाहनं प्रति गतवान् | द्वारम् उद्घाट्य कुञ्चिकाम् आसनदे निक्षिप्य द्वारपिधानम् अकरोत् | वणिक् आक्रोशत् “ए! ए! किं करोषि?” इति |

शिल्पी हास्यपूर्वकम् अवदत् “भवतो वाहनं यथास्थिति कीलितम् अस्ति | भवान् अन्यं शिल्पिन्ं आह्वातुम् अर्हः |” इति |

The old man threw up his hands and signaled, “Oh mechanic do what has to be done.” The mechanic following the words of the old man said, “ in all respects, I will not take your alms or money given with pity. Please take back the 20 rupees,” and threw the money at the merchant’s face. The mechanic suddenly marched towards the car. He opened the car, threw the keys on the chair, and shut it. The merchant screamed, “What are you doing?” The mechanic exulted, “Your vehicle is locked as how it was. You are eligible to call another mechanic.”
