मीनविक्रेता-कृष्णफलकं च कथा

कस्मिंश्चित ग्रामे अन्यमोहः नाम कश्चन विक्रेता मीनव्यापारं करोति स्म | समुद्रसमीपे एक: लघुगिरिः आसीत् | तस्य उपरि स्थितानां नारिकेलवृक्षाणां अधः आसीत् तस्य आपणः | तत्र नानाविधाः मीनाः जलचराः च लभ्यन्ते | एकदा ग्रीष्मकालमध्याह्ने सूर्यातपः भयङ्करः नासीत् | समुद्रात् मन्दसमीरः अपि उह्यते स्म | भोजनान्तरं पार्श्वे स्थिते कृष्णफलके सुधाखण्डेन "प्रत्यग्राः मीनाः विक्रेयाः अत्र" इति तेन लिखितम् |

In a certain village, there lived a fish seller whose name was Anyamohah (Confused by others). A small mountain was by the seaside. Underneath the coconut trees on top of the mountain was his shop. There, we get different varieties of fish and aquatic species. Once, a summer afternoon wasn’t very hot. A balmy breeze was flowing from the sea. After lunch, he wrote on a blackboard with a chalk “Fresh fish sold here.”

प्रथम: बृहतुदरः ग्राहकः स्यूतम् आनीय एवं अपृच्छत्,"अद्य किम् लभ्यते भोः? कृष्णफलके किमिदं भवता लिखितम्?" अन्यमोहः उक्तवान् "भगवन् अद्य उषःकाले धीवराः गृहीताः मीनाः मया प्राप्ताः अतः ते प्रत्यग्राः |" ग्राहकः विहस्य उक्तवान् " कोऽपि शुष्कमीनानां विक्रयणं करोति खलु? अतः "प्रत्यग्राः " इति पदं फलकात् मार्जयेव किल | अन्यमोहः अङ्ग्यकरोत् | अथ अन्यमोहेन लिखितं कृष्णफलकं एवं दर्शितं "मीनाः विक्रेयाः अत्र" इति |

The first big-bellied customer brought his bag and asked “What do we get today? What have you written on the blackboard?” Anyamoha responded, “Sir, I have the fish caught by the fishermen early this morning and thus they are fresh.” The customer laughed, “Does anyone sell dried fish?” So should we erase the word “fresh” from the plate? Anyamoha agreed. Now the plate written by him read “Fish sold here.”

पार्श्वे पश्यन् नारिकेलानां उद्यानपालकः अवदत्, "अत्र आघ्राणेन जलचराणां विक्रयणं भवति न तु मल्लिकापुष्पाणि इति मूढाः अपि जानन्ति अतः "अत्र" इति पदस्य फलके का आवश्यक्ता?" अन्यमोहः तस्य वचनम् अवगत्य फलकशुद्धम् अकरोच्च "मीनाः विक्रेयाः" इति | विद्यालयस्य दीर्घनासिकवान् प्रध्यापकः द्विचक्रिकया गच्छन् आसीत् | सः अन्यमोहं उक्तवान् च "अरे मीनदानं करोति किम् ? व्यापारं एव करोति किल? किमर्थं फलके विक्रेयाः" इति लिखितवान्?" अन्यमोहः उत्तरं दत्तवान् "भद्र! उत्तमा सूचना एव | अहं मार्जयामि | अधुना पश्यतु "मीनाः" इति लिखामि च |

An observant coconut gardener nearby said,”By smelling even a fool knows fish is sold here so why do you need the word “fish?” Anyamoha, understanding his point, cleaned the slate which now read “Fish sold.” The long-nosed school principal was going on his bicycle. He told Anyamoha, “Hey! Are you giving away your fish as charity? You are doing business right?’ So why did you write “sold” on the board? Anyamoha responded, “Sir, good suggestion. I will clean it. Look it now says - Fish.”

अत्रान्तरे ग्रामस्य बुद्धिमान् नायकः तत्र आगत्य एवं उक्तवान् "अन्यमोह! यदा अहम् इतः अर्धक्रोशकदूरे आगच्छन् आसं तदा वायुम् आघ्राय मया ज्ञातं यत् कुत्रचित् पार्श्वे एव मीनाः प्राप्यन्ते इति | किमर्थं "मीनाः" इति लिखितव्यम्?" तदनुसारेण अन्यमोह: कृष्णफलकात् सर्वेषां अक्षराणां मार्जनं कृतवान् | फलकं नूतनफलकं इव कृष्णवर्णं सञ्जातम् |

In the interim, the wise village leader also came there and said, “Anyamoha, when I was coming half a mile away I know by smelling the air that somewhere around we get fish so why do you need to write ‘fish’?” In this manner, Anyamoha deleted everything from the board. The board became black like a new board.”

किञ्चित् कालपर्यन्तं एका सुन्दरी शाटिका धृता नारी फलकं उद्दिश्य आक्रोशत् | सा अन्यमोहस्य पत्नी अपि चासीत् | "रे रे मूर्ख! कृष्णपलकस्य प्रयोजनं किमर्थम् अत्र? यतकिमपि न लिखितं चेत् विक्रयणं कथं भवति? | ईश्वरो रक्षतु मम कुटुम्बम् |

Sometime later a beautiful Sari clad lady saw the board and screamed. She was also Anyamoha’s wife. “Fool! What is the point of a slate? If you don’t write anything how will there be sales? Oh god! Please protect my family.
