मूढः सिंहः चतुरः शशः

एकस्मिन् वने अनेकाः मृगाः वसन्ति स्म | तेषु मृगेषु एकः सिंहः अपि आसीत् | अयं सिंहः वनराजः परन्तु बहुदुष्टः च आसीत् | सः भोजनं कृत्वा अपि विनोदार्थम् अन्यान् मृगान् मरायति स्म | येन केन परकारेण मृगाः सिंहस्य अत्यचारं निवारयितुं इच्छन्ति स्म ।अतः वृक्षस्य अधः जन्तवः सम्भाषणं कृतवन्तः | सर्वे एकम् उपायम् अपि अकुर्वन् | मृगाः मूषकं दूतं कृत्वा वनराजं मेलितुं प्रेषयन्ति स्म |

In one forest, many animals lived. There was also a lion among them. This lion was the king of the forest, but also very wicked. Even after eating his food, he used to kill the animals for his pleasure. By some means, the animals desired to end the lion’s tyranny. Therefore, the animals had a conversation under a tree. They all came up with a plan. The animals sent a mouse as a messenger to meet the king of the jungle.

मूषकः सिंहसमीपं गत्वा अवदत् | “भोः राजन् वयं प्रतिदिनं भवन्तम् एकं मृगं खादनार्थं दास्यामः | कृपया अस्मान् न मारयतु |” सिंहः अचिन्तयत् “क्रियां विना अहं मांसं प्राप्स्यामि |” सः सन्तोषेण् अकथयत् “मूषक उत्तमः उपायः | तथैव कुरू |

The mouse went near the lion and said “Oh King, we will give you one animal every day for food.” The lion thought “Without any effort I am getting meat” and gladly said “Oh mouse, great plan, do so that way.”

एवमेव् तत् दिनात् मृगाः प्रतिदिनम् एकैकं तेषां शरीरं सिंहाय बलिं दत्तवन्तः | कालः अतीतः | शशस्य पर्यायः आगतः | सः अश्वत्थतरोः अधः उपविश्य आलोचत् | शशः वनमार्गेण् शनैः शनैः विलम्बेन गतः | त्रिवादनम् अभवत् | क्षुधितः सिंहः कुपितः च शशं दृष्ट्वा उच्चैः अगर्जत् | शशः असत्यम् अवदत् “क्षम्यताम् | भवतः शत्रुः आक्रमणं कृत्वा मां गृहीतवान् | अहं कथमपि तस्य मुखात् पतित्वा अपसर्पम् | सिंहस्य कोपः अतीतः “सः कः? कुत्र वसति ? मां दर्शय |

In that way, from that day onwards daily, the animals one by one gave themselves up as a sacrifice to the lion. Time went by. The rabbit’s turn came. He sat under a fig tree and deeply contemplated. The rabbit went through the forest very slowly and was delayed. The hungry and angry lion roared on seeing the rabbit. The rabbit responded with lies “Please forgive me. Your enemy attacked and grabbed me. I somehow fell from his mouth and escaped.” The lion’s anger increased “Who is he? Where does he live? Show me?”

शशः सिंहस्य मुखं दृष्ट्वा त्रस्यन् एवम् अवदत् | नृप सः अन्यः सिंहः | भयङ्करः बलवान् अघोरः च | तस्य स्थानं दर्शयितुं इच्छन् शशः सिंहेन सह तत् दिशां प्रत्यगच्छत् | तौ एकं कूपम् अपश्यताम् | “राजन् भवतः भीत्वा सिंहः कूपस्य अन्तः गोपयति |” इति शशः अवदत् | कूपस्य जले सिंहः तस्य प्रतिबिम्बम् पश्यन् “एषः मम शत्रुः” इति अचिन्तयत् | बुद्धिहीन: सिंह:सहसा अविचारेण् अन्तः अकूर्दत् |

The rabbit seeing the lions face fearfully said “Oh King! He is another lion. Scary, strong, and wild.” The rabbit desiring to show its location went with the lion in that direction. They both saw a well. The rabbit said “Oh king, on seeing you he is hiding in the well.” The lion saw his reflection in the well’s water and thought “He is my enemy.” The brainless lion suddenly and without proper reasoning jumped in.

मूढः सिंहः जले अपतत् | जले निमग्न: सिंह: श्वासार्थं कष्टम् अनुभूय मृत: | पश्चात् सन्तोषेण शशः मित्रान् असूचयत् | रात्रौ सर्वे मृगाः वृक्षस्य अधः हसन्तः कौमुदिभोजनं कृतवन्तः | गीतवन्तः नृत्यवन्तः च | यद्यपि शशस्य शक्तिः लघु तथापि तस्य बुद्धिः विशालः एव |

The foolish lion fell into the water. Being immersed in the water and struggling for breath the lion died. Later, the rabbit happily informed his friends. In the night, the animals laughing had a moon light dinner under a tree. They sang and danced. Even though the rabbit’s strength was less, his brains were large indeed.
