पुत्री कुत्र गता

An incident which happened with my daughter. Is being considered for publication at Sambhashana Sandesha Magazine

गत शुक्रवासरे सन्ध्याकालसमये कार्यालये कार्यं कुर्वन् निमग्नः आसम् | तदानीं भार्या दूरवाण्या माम् आह्वयत् | “भोः! जयेष्ठपुत्री कुत्र न जाने, गृहं च न प्रत्यागतम्” इति वदन्ती सा भयं प्राकटयत् | तदा समयः आसीत् सार्धचतुर्वादनम् अतः गृहम् निश्चयेन प्रत्यागन्तव्यम् | वस्तुतः पुत्री प्रतिदिनं विद्यालयतः सार्धद्विवादने शालालोकयानम् आरुह्य त्रिवादने गृहम प्रतिनिवर्तते | तद्दिने सा कुत्र गता इति चिन्तयन् अहं भार्यां एवमुक्तवान् | “अयि! प्रायः सा पितृभगिन्याः गृहं गतवती आसीत्” इति | यत्र वयं वसामः तस्मिन् एव उपमार्गे पार्श्वे गृहतः पञ्चमगृहं तस्याः | कदाचित् पुत्र्यां गृहम् आगच्छन्त्यां सत्यां कञ्चित् समयं तत्र विश्राम्य गृहं पुनरागच्छति |

Last Friday during dusk I was at my office soaked in work. At that time, my wife called me by phone. “Hey! I don’t know where our older daughter is and she has not returned home,” she said fearfully. It was 4.30 pm and she must have returned for sure. In fact, daily she boards the bus at 2.30 pm and returns home at 3.00 pm. “Where did she go that day?” Thinking so, I told my wife, “Hey, perhaps she has gone to my aunt’s (Dad’s sister’s) house.” Where we live, in the same street and not far, the fifth house from ours is hers. Sometimes when coming home she relaxes there for sometime and comes home.

मम कनिष्ठपुत्र्या सह चिन्ताग्रस्ता सा मम भार्या जयेष्ठतनयां अन्वेषटुं तत्र गता | ताभ्यां द्वारं ताडितं परन्तु प्रत्युत्तरं न श्रुतम् | माता च कनिष्ठपुत्री उच्चैः तस्याः मम पुत्र्याः च नाम आह्वयताम् | यानगृहस्य काचवातायनस्य द्वारा अन्तः अवलोक्य कारयानं तत्र नास्ति इति ज्ञातवन्तौ | पितृभगिनी कुत्रचित् बहिः गतवती इति भाति | गृहस्य वामभागे अन्यदपि द्वारम् अस्ति यत् मम पितृभगिनी सर्वदा उद्घाटितम् स्थापितवती | तत् उद्घाट्य उभे अन्तः प्राविशताम् | ताभ्यां मम पुत्र्याः पादत्राणे वा विद्यालयस्यूतः कुत्रापि न दृष्ट: | तथापि गृहे तां अन्वेष्टुं सर्वत्र च सर्वान् प्रकोष्ठान् वीक्षेते स्म परन्तु मम पुत्री कुत्रापि न उपविशन्ती वा कस्यामपि शय्यायां न सुप्ता आसीत् | एवं भार्या मह्यं जङ्गमदूरवाण्या सर्वं न्यवदेयत् |

My worried wife along with my younger daughter went there to search my older daughter. They knocked on the door but there was no response. Mom and my younger daughter loudly called my aunt’s and daughter’s names. Having seen through the glass window of the garage they discerned the car wasn’t there. It appears my aunt has gone out somewhere. Onto the left side of the house there is another door which my aunt always keeps open. On opening the door they entered. They couldn’t see my daughter’s shoes or school bag. In order to search for her in the house they looked everywhere and at all the rooms yet she wasn’t sitting anywhere nor was she sleeping in any bed. My wife recounted everything through the cell phone.

“मन्येहं प्रायः सा शालालोकयानात् एव न अवातरत्” इत्यहं सूचितवान् | भार्या उत्तरितवती “अहं शालालोकयानस्य चालकेन सह अभाषे | आदौ “शालायां विद्यमानेषु शिशुषु तया एव लोकयाने आरोढुं विस्मृतम्” इति न्यदेवयत् परन्तु क्षणं विरम्य सः स्मरन् मनः पर्वर्तितवान् यत् सा विद्यालयानान्तरं सा तत्र मम तिष्ठति लोकयाने एव आरुह्य अत्र एतस्मिन् मार्गान्ते लोकयानस्थानके अवतरति स्म |” इति | अनेन सा विद्यालये नास्ति इति दृश्यते” |

I think she probably didn’t get down from the school bus. My wife replied, I spoke with the school bus driver. In the beginning he said amongst the students present there she forgot to climb the bus but after a second later he remembered and changed his mind that after school she climbed into my standing bus and got down at this bus stop at the end of the street. Anyhow, she doesn’t appear to be at school.

भार्या समीपस्थे उपमार्गे पुत्र्याः निवसत् मित्रम् अपृच्छत् “वत्स! अद्य यदा त्वं गृहं प्रतिगच्छन् आसी: तदा लोकयाने मम बालां दृष्टवान् किम्?” इति | बालः उत्तरं दत्तवान् “आर्ये न | सा अद्य लोकयानेन न आगता | सा न दृष्टा च मया |” इति | बालक-लोकयानचालकयोः वर्णनं परस्परं विपरीतम् आसम् | एतेन संभ्रान्ता भार्या विद्यालयं गन्तुं उद्युक्ता | एतदभ्यन्तरे पितृभगिनी अपि गृहं प्रत्यागत्य कनिष्ठपुत्र्या सह अन्वेष्टुं आरभत | पुत्री परिभ्रष्टा इति जानन्तः केचन प्रतिवेशिनः अपि साहाय्यं दातुं बहिः आगत्य अनेकासु दिक्षु वीक्षमाणाः गतवन्तः |

My wife asked the boy living at the street close by, “Dear, when returning home today did you see my girl on the bus? The boy replied, “Madam, no. She did not come on the bus and I did not see her. The narration of the boy and the school bus driver was contrary to each other. Because of this, my confused wife started to go to school. By then my aunt also returned home and began the search with my younger daughter. Knowing my daughter was lost, some neighbors also decided to offer help and went looking in different directions.

अत्रान्तरे भार्या प्रतिनिवर्तमानं मां भीत्या प्रार्थयत् “समयः अतीतः सूर्यास्तसमयः अपि च इदानीम् | अपकारकः कोऽपि पुत्र्याः बालापहारं कृतवान् चेत्?” इति | भवान् कृपया दुरवाणीं स्वीकृत्य ९११ आहूय आरक्षकान् सूचयतु | तेषां सहायता आवश्यकी |” इति | तदनुसारेण आरक्षकं आहूय सर्वं प्रसङ्गम् अकथयम् | आरक्षकः मां सूचितवान् “श्रीमन् प्रथमं विद्यालये अन्वेषयतु | तत्र नास्ति चेत् भवतः पत्नी मां आह्वयतू | इति |”

In the meantime, as I was returning home my wife requested me, “It is getting late and sunset is happening. What if some kidnapper has kidnapped our daughter? You please pick up the phone and dial 911 and inform the cops. Their help is needed. In that regard, I called the cops and narrated the whole story. The cop informed me, “Sir, first search the school. If she isn’t there then let your wife call me.”

मयि पत्नीं सान्त्वयति सति मम मनसि प्रकाशमान: विचारः अस्फुरत् | पत्नीं पृष्टवान् “गृहे कुत्र कुत्र पुत्रीं मार्गयति स्म?” इति | उक्तवती सा “अहं सर्वान उपरितनप्रकोष्ठान अपश्यम् | प्रतिदिनं यदा कार्यं कुर्वती अस्मि तदा सा आगत्य मां प्रीत्या आलिङ्गयति | अनन्तरं स्यूतं भित्याम् अवलंभ्य वस्त्रं परिवर्तयति | अद्य सा मम पुरतः नैव आगच्छत् | तस्याः शालास्यूतः अपि कुत्रापि नास्ति | प्रकोष्ठेषु शय्या: रिक्ता: सन्ति | प्रथमतल्पे अपि सा न दृश्यते” इति |

While I was pacifying my wife a brilliant idea occurred to me. I asked my wife, “In the house where all did you search for her?” She said, “I looked at all the rooms upstairs. Everyday when I am working she comes and lovingly hugs me. After, she hangs the bag on the wall and changes her clothes. Today she didn’t come near me. I don’t see her school bag anywhere as well. The beds in all the rooms are empty. I don’t see her in the main level as well.

भवत्या अधोगृहे दृष्टम् किम्? इति विलसन् कुतूहलेन अपृच्छम् | आश्चर्यचकिता भार्या उक्तवती “न! तत्र न दृष्टम् | कदापि सा तत्र न गच्छत्येव” | इति | मम स्वश्रूः गृहे आसीत् तदानीम् | अथ ताम् आहूय प्रार्थितवान्, “भवती कृपया तलगृहं झटिति गच्छतु, तत्र पश्यतु पुत्री अस्ति वा नास्ति” इति | सा अधः अगच्छत्, किञ्चित्कालपर्यन्तं च उच्चस्वरेण आक्रोशत् “अत्र शालास्यूतं पश्यामि | एकनिमेषं तिष्ठ, प्रकोषठान् पश्यानि च |” इति | तत्र मम पुत्री पुरातने पर्यङ्के शान्तस्वरुपेण निद्रां कुर्वती आसीत् | अधोगृहस्य उद्घाटितेन द्वारेण अन्तः प्रविश्य श्रान्ता सती निद्रावशा जाता | पूर्वाह्ने शालायां व्यायामवर्गे पञ्चकिलोमीटर्-दूरं यावत् परिधाव्य तया एवं अवस्था प्राप्ता | नूतनपर्यङ्काः अद्य प्राप्य पुरातनपर्याङ्काः अधः अस्माभिः स्थापिताः, अतः तान् द्रष्टुं उत्साहेन सा अधः गता भवेत् | केभ्यश्चित दिनेभ्यः पूर्वमेव एतत् गृहं क्रीत्वा आगतम् अतः एतावत्पर्यन्तं गृहस्य सम्पूर्णं परिचयं न प्रापत्वन्तः |

Did you look in the basement, I asked with gleaming curiosity. My wife, being amazed, said, “No, I didn’t look there. She never goes there. My mother-in-law was home at that time. I called her and requested, “Can you please go to the basement and see if she is there or not there. She went down and after a little time shouted loudly. I see her school bag here. Wait for a minute. Let me see the rooms. There my daughter was sleeping peacefully on our old couch. She had entered the basement through the open door and being tired became sleepy. Before noon having run a 5K during her PE period before she was in this state. Having gotten the new couches today we had transported the older couches downstairs. In order to see them she might have gone downstairs excited. Only a few days before we bought this house and came so thus far we haven’t had complete familiarity with the house.

यदा पुत्री जागरित्वा सर्वां वार्तां श्रुतवती तदा भयेन रोदितुं आरभत | गृहम् आगत्य कम्पमान्याः तस्याः रक्तवर्णे अश्रुपूरिते नेत्रे अवलोक्य सान्त्वयन् उक्तवान् “रोदनं मास्तु! किमर्थं रोदिषि किमपि न जातम् | त्वं भगवतः अनुग्रहेण सुरक्षिता असि |” इति | पुत्री अवदत् “क्षम्यताम्! दुःखिता अभवम् | आरक्षकाः तु सदैव व्यापृताः सन्ति | किञ्चित् दहत् गृहं स्यात् | तेषां जनानां संरक्षणं परित्यज्य मम साहाय्यं दातुं आगछन्ति चेत् तेन वृथा कार्येण किं प्रयोजनम्?” इति | वयम् उच्चैः विहस्य देवं नमस्कृत्य भोजनार्थं बहिः तस्याः प्रियोपहारमन्दिरं प्रति गतवन्तः |

When my daughter woke up and listened to the entire news she began crying with fear. Upon returning home and seeing her shaking, her eyes red filled with tears, I began pacifying her I said, “Please don’t cry, nothing has happened.” By God's grace you are safe. My daughter said, “I am sorry and I am sad. Cops are always busy. What if there is a burning house? If they had left the people there and came to rescue me then what is the use of that useless work?” We all laughed loudly, thanked the Lord and went out to eat at her favourite restaurant.
