Story of Pied-Piper written in simple sanskrit

“हाम्लिन्” नाम कश्चन प्रसिद्धम् नगरम् आसीत् यत्र बहवः जनाः प्रतिवसन्ति स्म | तत्र बहुजनकारणेन अधिकं भोजनं आवश्यकं आसीत् | अधिकं भोजनं पक्तुम् इतोऽपि जनाः तत्र समागताः | किञ्चित् कालानन्तरं वर्धमानात् नगरात् बहवः विद्यालयाः गृहाणि मन्दिराणि मनोरञ्जनस्थलानि अपि च निर्मितानि अभवन् | तत्र काचन महती नदी नगरमध्ये प्रावहत् | जनाः बृहद्वहित्रेषु धान्यानि नदीमार्गेण नौकास्थानं आनयन्ति स्म | धान्यागारेषु अपि धान्यपूरिताः प्रकोष्ठाः आसन् | न केवलं गोधूमाः परन्तु अन्यनानाविधानि धान्यान्यपि तत्र स्थापितानि आसन् | अनेकेषु यन्त्रागारेषु एतानि धान्यानि धान्यचूर्णं कृत्वा पेषणम् उत्पद्यते स्म |

There was a town called Hamlin where a lot of people lived. Because of a lot of people, there was a need for lots of food. To obtain more food many more people came there. After some time, because the town was growing, many schools, houses, places of worship, and entertainment centers were created. There, a mighty river flower in the middle of the town. People brought grains through the river on big cargos. Even in granaries there were rooms filled with grains. Not only wheat, but also various other grains were kept. In many factories, these grains were crushed and powdered to produce flour.

नगरस्य संवर्धमानात् धान्यसम्बन्धीय-वाणिज्यात् भोजनालयेषु, मार्गेषु, गृहेषु, यन्त्रशालासु च अत्यन्तं मलं सञ्जातम् | अत्यन्तं मलम् किम् उत्पादयति? मूषकाः | गच्छता कालेन मूषकाः सर्वत्र आगत्य मूषकशिशून् प्रसूय सहस्रगुणिताः अभवन् | गृहेषु अवकरिकासु उपहारमन्दिरेषु सर्वेषु स्थलेषु अटनं आरभन्त | एतान् उग्ररूपान् बृहद्मूषकान् अवलोक्य भयेन विडालाः अपि पलायितवन्त: | त्रिचतुरं मूषकदर्शनं विना न कोऽपि स्नानगृहे स्नानं कर्तुम् अशक्नोत् | शिशुभिः विद्यालये स्यूतेभ्यः पुस्तकानि यदा स्वीक्रियन्ते स्म तदा ते विद्यमानान् मूषकान् कदाचित् गृहीतवन्तः | उत्पतद्भिः मूषकैः निद्रां कुर्वन्तः मनुष्याः जागरिताः अभवन् | गृहिण्यः पाकशालायां मूषकपुरीषं द्रष्टुं विना भोजनं पक्तुम् असमर्थाः आसन् |

Because of the rapidly growing grain-trade, in all hotels, pathways, houses, and factories, a lot of filth was generated. In due course of time, the rats came everywhere, and gave birth to more rats, and these rats became a thousandfold. In homes, trash bins, hotels, and all places they began roaming. On seeing these fierce-looking rats, even cats fled. It was impossible to shower in the bathroom without seeing three or four rats. Children, while taking out their books from their bags, sometimes grabbed the rats. Men woke up by the rats falling on them. Housewives found it impossible to cook without seeing rat droppings.

एवं मूषकैः अहोरात्रं बाध्यमानाः नागरिकाः ज्ञातवन्तः यत् किमपि कर्तव्यम् इति | ते सर्वे सम्भूय नगराध्यक्षस्य गृहं गत्वा तेषां समस्यां परिहर्तुं प्रार्थयन् | वस्तुतः नगराध्यक्षः भ्रष्टाचारः आसीत् | तस्य अधिकारिणः साहाय्यकाः च अल्पबुद्धयः अविवेकिनः दुराचाराः च आसन् | तैः जनानां लाभाय प्रयोजनकार्यं किमपि न कृतम् | अतः नगरनायकस्य शासनं व्यर्थम् जातम् | तेन उक्तम् “नगरात् बहिः खननं कृत्वा बिलं प्राप्नुवन्तु यत्र आहारशिष्टानि स्थापयेम | अनेन आकृष्टाः मूषकाः तत्र पतित्वा मरिष्यन्ति” इति | यद्यपि जनैः प्रयत्नः कृतः तथापि सहस्रशः मूषकाः सर्वत्र विहरन्ति स्म |

In this manner, the citizens, being troubled day and night, knew something ought to be done. They all went to the leader and requested a solution to their problem. It was a fact that the city leader was corrupt. His officers and helpers were petty minded, lacked discrimination, and of bad character. They did nothing of importance for the people. The rule was rendered useless. The leader said, “Outside the city, dig and create a pit where we may place leftover food. By this, the mice will fall and die.” Even though the people tried, thousands of mice were still roaming everywhere.

कुप्यन्तः जनाः पुनः शासनभवनं गत्वा सशब्दं द्वारताडनम् अकुर्वन् | तेषाम् अतृप्तिं उच्चैः पुनः अधिपतये निवेदितवन्तः | जनानां सान्त्वनं कर्तुं सः अलिन्दात् मन्द्स्वरेण उक्तवान् | “अलं चिन्तया | कृपया सर्वे शान्ताः भवन्तु | परिहारः कः इत्यहमपि न जानामि | मम उपायं वदामि | यः मूषकान् नगरात् बहिः सफलतया निष्कासयति तस्मै अहं सहस्रसुवर्णनाणकानि दास्यामि” इति |

The men, being angry, went to the city hall and banged on the door. They expressed their dissatisfaction to the leader. In order to pacify them, he spoke softly from his balcony. “Please be calm without anxieties. I do not know what the solution is as well, but I can tell you my plan. Whosoever successfully throws the mice outside the town, for him I will give a thousand gold coins.

अन्यस्मिन् दिने कश्चन वैदेशिकः नगरम् आगत्य मुख्यमार्गेषु सञ्चरन् आसीत् | सर्वेषां अपेक्षया तस्य व्यवहारः विचित्रः असाधारणः च | तस्य वस्त्राणि अपि चित्रवर्णीयानि | सः दीर्घं शिरस्त्रं धृतवान् आसीत् यस्मात् पिच्छानि अस्थीनि शङ्खाः च लम्भमानाः आसन् | तदीये हस्ते गृहीतं प्रकाशमानं वेणुं दृष्ट्वा अवगम्यते यत् एषः चित्रवर्णीयः वेणुवादकः इति | सः तस्य मुखे वर्तमान्या नाड्या धूमपानं कुर्वन् अधिपतेः गृहं गन्तुं सङ्कल्पितवान् |

The next day, a foreigner came to the city and was roaming on the main roads. In comparison to others, he was queer and unique. His clothes were pied. He was wearing a log hat from which feathers, bones, and conches were dangling. By seeing the gleaming flute in his band, we can know that he was a pied piper. Smoking from the pipe existing in his mouth, he decided to meet the leader at his house.

वेणुवादकेन आदरपूर्वकम् उक्तं, “श्रीमन्! अस्यां नगरसमस्यां श्रुत्वा तां निराकर्तुम् आगतवान् अस्मि | मूषकान् सर्वान् नगरात् बहिर्निष्कास्य मूषकबाध्यमानं नगरं मूषकविहीनं करिष्यामि | मदीयं शुल्कं केवलं पञ्चसहस्राणि सुवर्णनाणकानि” इति | अधिपतिना उत्साहेन अङ्गीकृतम् |

The leader spoke with respect. “Sir, on hearing this town’s problem, I have come here to solve it. Having thrown all the mice outside the town I will make the mice-infested town mice-free.”

अपरस्मिन् दिने प्रातः वेणुवादकः नगराभिमुखं प्रस्थितवान् | सः दीर्घं निःश्वसन् वेणुवादनं आरब्धवान् | वेणोः मधुरस्वरात् सर्वेषां मूषकाणां मनांसि स्तब्धानि जातानि | मूषकाः एकैकशः गृहेभ्यः भोजनालयेभ्यः वातायनेभ्यः द्वारेभ्यः बिलेभ्यः मल-नलिकाभ्यः च आकर्षन्तं वेणुवादकं प्रति धावितवन्तः | वेणुवादकः नृत्यतः मूषकान् नयन् समुद्रं प्रति असरत् | तत्र मूषका: एकैकशः जले पतित्वा मृताः अभवन् | मूषकमरणवार्ता सर्वत्र प्रसृता |

The next day in the morning, the pied piper marched towards the town. Taking a deep breath, he began playing his flute. By the melodious sound, the minds of all the mice became stunned. From hotels, windows, doors, holes, and drain pipes, one by one the mice ran towards the alluring pied piper. The pied piper leading the dancing mice marched towards the sea. One by one the mice fell into the water and died. The news of the mice dying spread everywhere.

वेणुवादकेन शासकभवनं प्राप्य उक्तम्, “भवतः इच्छानुसारं भवदीयं नगरं मूषकरहितं भूत्वा इदानीं शोभते अतः मदीयं धनं दीयताम्” इति | नायक: उच्चैः विहस्य अनपेक्षमाणं वेणुवादकं अवदत्, “नाटकम् एव प्रदर्शितं किल भोः | वेतनयोग्यं कार्यं किं कृतम् ? मूषकाः स्वेच्छया जले पतिताः एव खलु | अतः भवान् किमर्थं धनार्हः?” इति | तदनुसारेण वञ्चकः नायकः नाणकम् एकम् अपि अदत्त्वा वेणुवादकं बहिर्निष्कासितवान् |

The pied piper upon reaching the city hall said, “According to your desire, your mice-free city is shining. Therefore, please give me money.” The leader laughed loudly and said to the unexpecting pied piper, “A nice show you put up. What work have you done deserving a wage? The mice fell into the water by their own wish, didn’t they? So what makes you eligible for money?” In this manner, the cheating leader sent the pied piper away without giving him a single coin.

अथ क्रुद्धः वेनणुवादकः मध्यरात्रे वेणुं गृह्णन् गृहात् बहिः आगत्य निमिषद्वयं स्थितवान् | दीर्घश्वासम् उद्धृत्य तेन नूतनरागेण वेनणुवादनम् आरब्धम् | निद्राणाः नगरस्य सर्वे शिशवः उत्थाय वेणोः आकृष्यमाणेन ध्वनिना गृहात् बहिरागत्य अनृत्यन् | परन्तु तस्मिन् एव समये तेनैव ध्वनिना तेषां मातापितरः गाढनिद्रां प्राप्तवन्तः | वेणुवादक: सर्वान् शिशून् वशीकृत्य तान् मधुररागेण नयन् नगरपर्यन्तं प्रति प्रस्थितवान् | तत्र कश्चन विशालगिरिः तिष्ठन् आसीत् | तस्मिन् मुखे किञ्चन उद्घाटितं द्वारम् अपि आसीत् | द्वारेण नगरस्य समग्राः शिशवः प्रविश्य अन्तर्गताः | ततः परम् द्वारम् अदृश्यमानं जातम् | एवमेव वेणुवादकः प्रतीप्रकारं प्राप्तवान् |

The angered pied piper, holding his flute, went outside in the middle of the night and stood for a couple of minutes. Taking a deep breath, he began playing a new tune on his flute. The sleeping children of the town woke up to the alluring sound of the flute, came outside, and danced. However, at the same time, by the same sound, their parents entered deep sleep. The pied piper, having enticed all the children, marched towards the outskirts of the town leading them. There, there was a certain huge hill. In its face was an open door as well. All the children entered and went in through the door. After that, the door disappeared. In this way, the pied piper got his revenge.

परेद्युः नगरजनाः जागरित्वा भीत्या शिशूनाम् अन्वेषणं कर्तुम् आरभन्त | अत्रान्तरे एकः पङ्गुः बालकः शनैः गच्छन् आसीत् अतः पर्वतस्य अन्तः गमनात् पूर्वमेव तत्र सर्वम् अदृश्यं जातम् | सः प्रत्यागत्य विद्यमानेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यः सर्वां घटनां तत्र निवेदितवान् | अधिपतिः सर्वैः सह गिरेः पुरतः तिष्ठन् क्षमाम् अयाचत | विंशतिसहस्र-सुवर्णनाणकानि अपि स्थापितवान् | अन्ते वेणुवादकः शिशून् नगरजनेभ्यः प्रत्यर्पितवान् परन्तु कोऽपि कुत्रापि तं द्रष्टुं नाशक्नोत् |

The next day, the citizens began searching for their kids out of fear. One lame boy was going slowly, so before he could enter the hill, everything there disappeared. He returned and recounted everything to everyone present there. The leader went with everyone, and standing before the mountain, pleaded for forgiveness. He also placed 20,000 coins there. In the end, the piper returned the kids, but no one was able to see him anywhere.
