केरळराज्यस्य कस्मिंश्चित् अरण्यप्रदेशे पर्वतप्रान्ते कश्चन लघुग्रामः आसीत् | तत्र मातापितृविहीनः दरिद्रः बालकः स्वमातामह्या सह प्रवृद्धः | मन्दारचन्द्रः तस्य नाम | यद्यपि सः दृढकायः धैर्यशाली, तथापि मुग्धः महान् मूढश्च | वसन्तकाले सम्प्राप्ते एकदा सः प्रथमवारम् प्रवासार्थं किञ्चन नूतनं नगरम् आगत्य तस्य सौन्दर्यं पश्यन् आसीत् | भगवतः वासुदेवस्य पार्श्वस्थं मन्दिरं प्रति अटन् अविज्ञाय एव तस्य अन्तः प्रविष्टः | मन्दिरस्य अपरभागे उन्नतैः तरुभिः आच्छादितं बृहदुद्यानं वर्तते स्म |

In a forest region of Kerala and at the border of a mountain range, there was a small town. There, a poor boy with no parents grew up with his mother-in-law. His name was Mandarchandra. Even though he was stout and brave, he was innocent and a great fool. Once when spring arrived, he journeyed and went to a new city for the first time to watch its beauty. While roaming towards Lord Vasudeva’s temple nearby, he accidentally entered it. At the back portion of the temple was a big garden covered by tall trees. 

मन्दारचन्द्रः वाटिकायां तत्र पर्णैः आवृतं कञ्चन शूर्पकर्णं दीर्घदन्तं प्राणिनं वीक्ष्य विस्मितः सन् तत्रैव अतिष्ठत् | “रे रे चल” इति बृहद्देहम् आह्वयन् कश्चन कृशकायः अङ्कुशकरः  रज्जुम् आकृष्य तस्य प्राणिनः समीपे तिष्ठन् आसीत्  | आश्चर्यान्वितः मन्दारचन्द्रः पूर्वपुच्छः एषः गजः इति अजानन्  कोऽयम् इति वक्तुम् आरभत | हस्तिपकेन तस्य आश्चर्यचकितं मुखं दृष्ट्वा सः मूर्खः इति क्षणमात्रेण निश्चितम् l “नमस्ते! नारायणोऽहम् | एनं जीविनं यदाकदापि न दृष्टवान् खलु ? चलद्वृक्षः इति उच्यते | यद्यपि वृक्षः तथापि वने भ्रमन् चरति, बृंहति, नद्याः पिबति वा” इति सः मन्दस्वरेण उवाच | 

Mandarachandra, upon seeing a creature covered with leaves who had ears like a winnow and long teeth, stood there amused. A lean person with a stick in his hands was standing near the big creature calling,“Hey! Hey! Move.” Mandarachandra wonderstruck, not knowing this animal with a tail in the front was an elephant, began asking “Who is it?” The mahout seeing his wonderstruck face knew instantly that Mandarchandra was a fool. He spoke in a mellow tone, “Oh hello! I am Narayana! Have you never ever seen this creature before? It is a walking tree. Despite being a tree, it grazes and roams in the forest, trumpets, or drinks from rivers.”

गजस्य शुण्डं तत्र तत्र कण्डूयमानः सः पुनः कथयितुम् आरभत “अस्तु एतस्य परिचयं करोमि | एषः महादेवः इति नाम्ना ज्ञायते | अत्र पश्यतु श्रीमन्” इति | अथ हस्तिपकः रज्जुं आकृष्य गजस्य उपरि आरुढवान्। "कदलीभक्षकः एषः अस्माकं ईश्वरस्य महान् सेवकः | भगवतः उत्सवमूर्तिं अस्य पृष्ठभागे कस्यचित् छत्रस्य अधः संस्थाप्य नगरे सञ्चार्यते | वस्तुतः ये ये जनाः धनिकाः तेऽपि तस्य उपरि उपविशन्तः वाहनम् इव नगरे भ्रमन्ति वने वा मृगयन्ते | समान्याः अपि तेभ्यः असूयन्ति |” इति सूचितवान्  |

Narayana, scratching the Elephant’s trunk here and there began to speak again. “Alright let me introduce him. He is known as Mahadeva. Now watch this, sir.” The mahout pulled the rope and climbed onto the elephant. He informed, “This eater of bananas is a great servant of our Lord. The Lord’s Utsava Idol is placed on his back under some umbrella and is roamed around in the city. In fact, those who are rich also sit on its back as though it is a vehicle and roam through the town or hunt. Commoners are jealous of them.”

एतदभ्यन्तरे हस्तिनः निष्कासितं जीर्णं भोजनं भूम्यां लोष्टवत् पतितम् आसीत् | तत् समीपस्थं मलम् अवलोक्य विस्मयमानस्य तस्य मन्दारचन्द्रस्य कथनात् पूर्वमेव नारायणः वक्तुम् आरब्धवान् | भवतः मनसि किं स्फुरति इति प्रायः मया ज्ञायते | तत् चलद्वृक्षस्य बीजम् यद्वपनेन अन्ये तादृशाः समानाः प्राणिनः उपलभ्यन्ते | एतेषां बीजानां  विक्रेता अपि अहमेव | बहु कथनेन किम् | भवतः आसक्तरहितं मुखं पश्यामि | क्षन्तव्योहं! पुनः मम कार्ये अहं निरतः भवामि |

In the meantime, the digested food discarded by the elephant was fallen there on the floor like a heap. Seeing the waste nearby and before the bemused Mandara Chandra could speak, Naraya began talking. “I know what has crossed your mind. These are the seeds of the creature which when sowed will give you many such similar ones. I am the seller of these seeds… but what is the use of speaking so much? I see your disinterested face. I am sorry! Let me get busy with my work.”

हस्तिपकैः श्रूयमाणः मन्दारचन्द्रः शिरश्चालनपूर्वकम् उक्तवान्, “न तथा श्रीमन्! मह्यं एषः असामान्यः चलद्वृक्षः निश्चयेन रोचते अतो बीजं क्रेतव्यं मया | मम समीपे शतत्रयं रूप्यकानि धनं अस्ति यत् सर्वं दातुं अहं अर्हम् ” इति | वञ्चकः नारयणः अङ्गीकृतवान् “वस्तुतः एतेषां महतां  द्विपानां  प्राप्त्यर्थं बीजविक्रयणेन मया त्रिसहस्रं रुप्यकाणि अपेक्षितानि परन्तु भवादृशं गुणिनं को वा न सेवेत ? शतत्रयं एव भवतु | परन्तु इतोऽपि घण्टाद्वयं यावत् गजशालायाः मार्जनकार्यं क्रियते चेत् अहं बीजानि स्वीकर्तुं सिद्धातां करोमि |” इति | विवेकशून्यः मन्दारचन्द्रः घण्टाद्वयं यावत् शालां सम्मार्ज्य प्रीणितः सन् सर्वं धनं व्ययीकृत्य कण्डोलपूरितं मलवस्तु गृहीत्वा गृहं निर्गतः |

Mandarachandra, being heard by the mahout, nodded his head and spoke, “It’s not like that sir. I do like this uncommon tree. Thus, I should buy it. I have 300 rupees with me that I am willing to give.” Narayana the cheat accepted and said, “factually, by selling these seeds to get these mighty creatures I expect 3000 dollars. However, who wouldn’t want to serve someone like you with such good qualities? Alright! Let it be 300 rupees. In addition, if you clean the elephant halls for another 2 hours, I can keep the seeds ready.” Mandarachandra, devoid of any reason, worked for 2 hours in the stall and, once being pleased, spent all his money having taken the basket full of elephant waste home. 

अत्रान्तरे यद्यपि रिक्तहस्तः सः धनहीनः तथापि कथञ्चित् ग्रामं प्राप्तवान् | गृहात् बहिः भूम्यां बीजारोपणम् अकरोच्च | सः प्रतिदिनं प्रातः श्रद्धया उत्थाय तेषु जलं सिञ्चति स्म | तस्मिन्नवसरे यदा मातामही गजस्य वृतान्तं श्रुतवती तदा दिग्भ्रान्ता सञ्जाता | “मूढ! अविवेकिन्! किं अकरोत्? महत् नष्टम् सम्पादितम्” इति उच्चैः अतर्जयत् l भूम्यां एकस्मिन् कोणे अत्यन्तं जलसेचनेन मेघवर्णायाः छत्रिकायाः गुल्मः विकसितः आसीत् | विलुप्तधनः मन्दारचन्द्रः छत्रसदृशीं तां छत्रिकां वीक्ष्य प्रसन्नः भूत्वा उच्चैः आक्रोशत् | "मातामहि! अत्र दृश्यताम् | सुन्दराणि छत्राणि उदितानि | भूमेः तस्य अधः आवाभ्याम् अदृश्यमाणः स्थूलः बृहन् च गजसमूहः सन्निहितः यः उपरि आगन्तुं सिद्धोऽपि | हस्तिनः पालयितारः हस्तिपका अपि प्रायः अधः भूम्या आच्छादिताः अधुना | समये सर्वे उपरि आगच्छेयुः यथा नारायणः प्रतिज्ञां कृतवान् | अद्य आरभ्य अहं लब्धकीर्तिः धनाढ्यः |" इति । अस्य मूर्खस्य वचनं शृण्वती दुःखिता मातामही पौत्रर्थम् ईश्वरं प्रार्थयन्ती मौनभावेन गृहं गता।

In the meantime, even though he was penniless and empty-handed, somehow he reached his town. He sowed his seeds outside his house. Every morning upon waking he sincerely sprinkled water on them. During such an instance, his grandmother heard of his elephant episode and she became alarmed. She yelled, “Fool! Indiscriminate! What have you done? We have earned a great loss.” On the floor in a corner, because of excessive watering, a clump of dark mushrooms had blossomed. Mandarachandra, who had lost all his money, when seeing them resemble umbrellas began shouting, “Grandma! Look here! Beautiful umbrellas have sprung. On the floor below, unseen by us, are a fat and big flock of elephants that are nearby and ready to emerge. Perhaps, their caretakers are now also covered by the floor. In time, they all should come out as promised by Narayana. From today onwards, I am rich.” The sad grandmother, who was listening to this fool, went home in the mood of silence praying to the Lord on her grandson’s behalf.
