चतुरः गणेशः

This story is adapted from a scene in the tamil movie “Thiruvilayadal” and retold in Sanskrit in simple present tense.

कैलासगिरे प्रासादे महेश्वरः सिंहासने उपविशन् अस्ति | तस्य भार्या पार्वती | तेषां पुत्रद्वयं गणेशः कार्तिकेयः च तत्र क्रीडति | तदा मुनिः नारदः एकं आम्रफलं आनीय तत्र आगच्छति | सः नारायण! नारायण! वदन् महेश्वरं पश्यति | नारदः परमेश्वरस्य पादयोः पतित्वा कीर्तयति “नमस्ते अस्तु भगवान विश्वेश्वराय महादेवाय त्र्यम्बकाय नमः |”

Lord Siva is sitting on a throne in a palace at Mount Kailash. His wife is Parvati. Their two sons Ganesha and Karthikeya are playing there. Then, saint Narada appears carrying a mango. Saying “Narayana Narayana” he sees Lord Siva. He falls at the Lord’s feet and glorifies him by offering prayers.

नारदः वदति “भोः शम्भो! अहं भवतः कृते एतत् ज्ञानफलं आनयामि | कृपया स्वेकरोतु” | माता पार्वती तत् फलस्य अर्धभागे कृत्वा पुत्रद्वयं दातुम् इच्छति | परमेश्वरः तु तयोः परीक्षां कर्तुम् इच्छति | सः गणेशं कार्तिकेयं च आह्वयति | महेश्वरः वदति “एतत् ज्ञानफलम् | खादित्वा ज्ञानं वैराग्यं च संपादयति | अधुना अहं परीक्षां ददामि | गणेशः अथवा कार्तिकेयः एव खादितुं शक्यते | यः लोकस्य प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा प्रथमम् आगच्छति अहं तस्मैइदं फलं ददामि |

Narada says, “Oh Lord Siva, I have brought a knowledge-bearing fruit for you. Please take it.” Mother Parvati desires to cut the fruit in half and give it to her children. Lord Siva however wants to give them a test. He calls Ganesha and Karthikeya. He says, “This is a knowledge-bearing fruit. You will gain knowledge and renunciation upon eating it. I will give you a test now. Only Ganesha or Karthikeya can eat it. Whoever circles the earth and comes first, I will give him the fruit.”

कार्तिकेयः सहसा वेगेन तस्य मयूरस्य उपरि आरुह्य प्रस्थानं करोति | गणेशः बुद्धिमान् | सः आलोच्य एव कार्यं करोति | कोऽपि अपि सहसा कार्यं न कर्तव्यम् | चतुरः गणेश: नारदं पृच्छति “लोकः कः? मातापितरौ कौ ? ”नारदः वदति “माता एव लोकः | पिता एव लोकः |” तत्र उपविशन्ती प्रजाः अपि तथैव वदन्ति | एतत् श्रुत्वा गणेशः चिन्तयति “अहं अत्रैव जनकस्य अम्बायाः प्रदक्षिणं करोमि | तत् कार्यं सरलम् |” तत् क्षणे एव गणपतिः मातापितरौ प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा स्पर्धां जयति |

Karhikeya suddenly and with speed climbed on his peacock and started. Ganesha is intelligent. He always thinks before doing any work. One should never perform any work suddenly. Clever Ganesha asks Narada, “What is this word? Who are parents?” Narada replies, “Mother is the world. Father is the world.” The subjects sitting there said the same. When Ganesha heard this he thought, “I will circle my parents here itself. That is easy work.” At that moment itself, Ganesha circumambulated his parents and won the competition.

समयः अतीतः | कार्तिकेयः लोकस्य प्रदक्षिणं कृत्वा उत्साहेन प्रति आगच्छति | “अहं विजयित्वा फलं खादामि” इति चिन्तयति | सः पश्यति गणेशः पार्वत्यः क्रोडे उपविश्य सन्तोषेण फलं खादति | माता कार्तिकेयं स्पर्धाया: परिणामं सूचयति | कार्तिकेयः शृणोति | तत् पश्चात् सः भ्रातरं मातापितरौ कोपेन निन्दति |“अहं अत्र वासं न करोमि | अन्यत् गृहं गत्वा तत्र वसामि” इति वदति | महेश्वरः पार्वती गणेशः च तं बहु अनुरोधं कुर्वन्ति | तथापि सः कैलासं त्यजति | सः पलनि नाम एकं पर्वतं गत्वा तत्र वसति |

Some time elapsed. Karthikeya circled the world and returned with excitement. “Having won I will eat the fruit.” He sees Ganesha sitting on his mother’s lap and happily eating the fruit. Mother explains to Karthikeya the result of the test. Karthikeya listens. Thereafter he scolds Ganesha and his parents. He says, “I will not live here. Siva, Parvathi, and Ganesh requested him to stay, a lot. Yet, he renounced Kailasha. He went to a mountain called Palani and lived there.

एषा कथा अस्माकं किं दर्शयति? गणेशः बुद्धेः ईशः | गणेशाय सर्वान् नमन्तु | गणपतिः सर्वं बुद्धिं ददातु |

What does this story tell us? Ganesha is the god of the intellect. Let everyone pray to Lord Ganesha. Let Ganesha give everyone intelligence.
