गर्वितः पण्डितः

This is a popular story in Indian folklore.

एकदा उत्तरप्रदेशे हरिद्वारपुरे महापूर्णनामकः एकः विप्रः निवसति स्म | पण्डितः सः सर्वान् शास्त्रान् प्रपठ्य “अहम् एतेषु पारङ्गतः अस्मि” इति चिन्तयित्वा अत्यन्तं गर्वितः अभवत् | एतस्मिन् नगरे पार्श्वैव च सूक्ष्मबुद्धिः नाम एकः दरिद्रः नाविकः प्रतिवसति स्म | सः विद्याविहीनः परन्तु तेन श्रद्धया उद्यमेन च कार्यं कृतम् | प्रतिदिनं पञ्चवादने एव उत्थाय यात्रिकान् जागरुकतया नद्या वहति स्म |

Once, in a town called Haridwar in Northern India there lived a Brahmin named Mahapurna. Being a Pandit that he was and having studied all the scriptures, he became very proud with the thought “I am now an expert in all these.” In the same town and not far away there lived a poor boatman whose name was Sukshmabuddhi.

कस्मिंश्चित् दिने वृष्टिकाले महापूर्णः छत्रं गृह्णन् गङ्गातीरदिशां प्रति गतः | तत्र नाविकः नौकायाः समीपे तिष्ठन् जनानां नद्याः पारं कर्तुं उद्युक्तः आसीत् | एषः पण्डितः अपि आगत्य तस्यां नौकायाम् आरुडवान् | नाविकेन सह उपविष्टाः दश जनाः नौकायां गङ्गानद्यां गच्छन्तः आसन् | तदा महापूर्णः सूक्ष्मबुद्धिं अपृच्छत्,”अरे कदापि त्वया वेदाध्ययनं कृतं किम्?” | नाविकः आदरेण उक्तवान् “भद्र! तदहं न जानामि” | “तव जीवनस्य एकपाद: नष्ट: भवति” इति पण्डितेन उक्तम् | सः पुनः अपृच्छत् “वेदपाठं न पठसि | पुराणान् वा ब्रह्मसूत्राणि जानाति खलु?” नाविकः प्रत्यवदत् “श्रीमन् ते के? क्षम्यताम् | अहं केवलं नौकां चालयित्वा यावत् धनं संपादयामि तेन धनेन परिवारं पालयामि च |”

One day during the rainy season Mahapurna clutched his umbrella and headed towards the banks of the Ganges. There the boatman was beside his boat getting ready to ferry the people standing there. This Pandit also came there and got into the boat. Along with the boatman 10 other passengers began going on river Ganga. Soon, Mahapurna asked Sukshmabuddhi, “Hey! have you studied the vedic scriptures?” The boat man replied “Oh auspicious one, no I do not know of it.” The Pandit retorted, “A quarter of your life is wasted.” He asked again, “You haven’t studied the Vedas, how about the Puranas or the Brahmasutras?” The boatman replied, “Sir, what are they? Pardon me. I just row the boat and whatever money I earn I raise my family with it.”

पण्डितः अवदत् “अरे त्वम् तव जीवनार्धं व्ययीकृतवान् | त्वया महाभारतं वा रामायणं ज्ञातम्?” नाविकः खेदेन तस्य अज्ञानं पण्डिताय निवेदितवान् | पण्डितः अवदत्, “तव जीवनस्य त्रिपादः नष्ट: अभवत् | तदनुसारेण पण्डितः अन्येषां जनानां पुरतः नाविकस्य बहु अपमानं कृतवान् | असमर्थः, मूढः, बुद्धिविहीनः इत्येतानि अपि नामधेयम् अकरोत् |

Pandit said, “Half your life is wasted. How about Ramayana or Mahabharata?” The boatman with great pain admitted his ignorance. The Pandit continued, “Three quarters of your life is gone.” In this manner he continued to belabor and insult the boatman in front of all the people. Incompetent, fool, unintelligent were some of the designations he named the boatman.

एतदभ्यन्तरे वृष्टेः कारणात् नौका वायुना कम्पमाना जाता | तदा एकः विशालतरङ्ग्ः चण्डबलेन नौकाम् प्राहरत् | अपघातात् यात्रिकाः गङ्गायां अपतन् | जले पण्डितः बहुजलं आपीय इतस्ततः पश्यन् भयेन प्राणरक्षणार्थं सहाय्यम् अन्वेष्यत् | नाविकः उच्चैः आक्रोशत् “भगवन् तरणं जानाति किम्?”| निमग्नः महापूर्णः भीत्वा अवदत्, "तरणं न ज्ञायते | अहो विनष्टोऽस्मि अहम् | मां रक्षतु” इति | नाविकेन उक्तं, “भवतः जीवनं नितरां नष्टं” | इत्युक्त्वा नाविकः स्वजीवरक्षणाय नदीतटां प्रति पलायनम् अकरोत् |

In the meantime, because of rains the boat began to rock due to the winds. A heavy wave with fierce strength struck the boat. An accident followed and the passengers fell into the ganges. The pandit drank a lot of water and was looking here and there searching for help to save his life. The boatman loudly yelled, “My Lord, do you know how to swim?” The Pandit as he was sinking replied with great fear, “I do not know how to swim. I am all lost now. Please save me.” The boat man replied “Well, your whole life is now wasted” and saying so he swam towards the shores to save his life.
