अग्रजः गोपालः

एकस्मिन् उटजे एका महिला वसति स्म | तस्याः पुत्रः श्यामः | महिलाया: अधिकं धनं नासीत् | दरिद्रा अपि बालकस्य विषये तस्याः बहु आसक्तिः आसीत् | विद्या दातुं इच्छन्ती सा बालकस्य विद्यारम्भं कारितुं चिन्तयति स्म | परन्तु गृहात् बहिः एकः बृहदारण्य: आसीत | बालकः भयेन एवम् अवदत् - “अम्ब! अहं कथं शालां गच्छामि ?” मार्गे वनम् अस्ति | मृगाः वसन्ति च | अहं शालां गन्तुं न इच्छामि | अम्बा अवदत् “श्याम! चिन्ता मास्तु | तव भ्राता गोपालः वने एव वसति | तं आह्वयतु | सः तव सहाय्यं करोति, शालां आनेष्यति च |”

A poor lady lived in a hut with her boy. Her son was Shyam. She did not have a lot of money. Despite being poor, she was interested in his affairs. Desiring to give him education she started thinking of beginning his schooling. However outside the house there was a big forest. The boy was afraid, and said “Mom, how can I go to school? There is a forest on the way? Animals live there. I do not wish to go to school.” Mother replied “Shyam, don’t be afraid. Your brother Gopal lives in the forest. Call him. He will help you and take you to school.

आगामि दिने बालकः उत्थाय स्नानं कृत्वा विद्यालयं प्रति गतः | सः अरण्यस्य परिसरं पश्यन् आसीत् | तदा एकस्य सिंहस्य गर्जनं श्रुतवान् | भीतः बालकः विश्वासेन उच्चैः गोपाल! गोपाल! इति अक्रन्दत् | श्यामस्य पुरतः एकः सुन्दरः नीलवर्नीयः युवकः आगतः | सः पीताम्बरं धृतवान् | मस्तके मयूर्पत्रमं च आसीत् | सः साक्षात् भगान् श्रीकृष्णः गोपालकरुपेण् आसीत्| गोपालः अवदत् “श्याम! अहं त्वां रक्षामि शालां नयामि च | भयम् मा अस्तु” | बालकस्य धैर्यं सञ्जातं | सः गोपालेन सह विद्यालयं गतवान् | शालायाः समप्तम् अनन्तरम् गृहं आनेतुम् आगमिष्यामि इति गोपालः बालं अवदत् |

Next day, the boy got up, showered and went towards the school. He was observing the environment in the forest. Then, he heard the roar of a lion. Being afraid, the boy loudly screamed “Gopal! Gopal!”. In front of Shyam appeared a beautiful blue colored youth. He was wearing a yellow cloth. His forehead bore a peacock feather. He was none other than Lord Krishna in the form of Gopal. Gopal said “I am here to protect you and take you to school.” The boy’s bravery grew. He went to school with Gopal. Gopal told the boy” After school ends I will come to take you home.”

बालः गृहं प्रति आगतवान् | सर्वान् विषयान् अम्बां सूचितवान् च | महिला एतत् श्रुत्वा भक्त्या सन्तोषेण रोदितवति | भगवन्तं च नमस्कारं कृतवति | एवमेव बालकः प्रतिदिनम् उत्साहेन श्रद्धया विद्यालयं गतवान्

अध्ययनं कृतवान् च | तस्य भक्तिः अपि गोपालस्य मित्रत्वेन अवर्धत | वने यदा बालकः गोपालं अचिन्तयत् तदा भगवान् तत् क्षणे एव तस्य समीपे आगत्य प्रत्यकक्षी भवति स्म |

The boy returned home. He told everything that happened to his mom. The lady on hearing this cried out of devotion. She also bowed down to the Lord. In this way every day the boy enthusiastically and faithfully went to school. His devotion to Gopal also grew because of their friendship. In the forest when the boy thought of Gopal, the Lord immediately appeared before him and revealed himself.

कस्मिन् चित् दिने आचार्यस्य जन्मदिवसः आगतः | सः भोजनार्थं सर्वान् छात्रान् आह्वयत् | छात्राः गुरवे उपायनं दातुं इच्छन्तः एकं उपायं कृतवन्तः | श्यामः तु निर्धनः | अम्बा दुःखिता भवति इति ज्ञात्वा तां किमपि न अपृच्छत् | भगवान् सर्वज्ञः | सः श्यामस्य समस्यां विना पृष्ट्वा एव सहायम् अकरोत् | ”एतं घटं नयतु | तस्मिन् मधुरं दधि अस्ति | तव गुरुः तुष्यति” इति गोपालः अवदत् |

Some days later it was the teacher’s birthday. He had invited all the students for food. All the students made a plan to give the teacher a gift. Shyam was, however, poor. Knowing his mom would feel sad he didn’t ask her anything. But the Lord is all-knowing. He helped Shyam without being asked. “Look at this pot. It has sweet curd in it. Your teacher will be satisfied” said Gopal.

गुरोः गृहे विद्यार्थिन्य: सुन्दराः उपहाराः तस्मै ददन्ति स्म | आचार्यः श्यामं अपश्यत् | मम् कृते किम् आनयति इति अपृच्छत् | बालकः दुःखितः अभवत् | तस्मिन् लज्जा उत्पन्ना | शनैः शनैः सः घटं अयच्छत् | सर्वे बालकाः असुन्दरं घटं पश्यन्तः अहसन् | परन्तु उत्तमः आचार्यः आनन्दः अनुभूतवान् | सः सन्तोशेण् अन्यमेकं विशालं पात्रं स्वीकृत्य तस्मिन् दधीनि पूरितवान् | यदा यदा घटः रिक्तं अभवत् तदा तदा पुनः संपूर्णः बभूव | अयं संभवः अनेकवारम् अभवत् | गुरोः आश्चर्यम् | कुतः लभ्यते एषः घटः इति सः पृष्टवान् | बालकः गोपालस्य विषये निवेदितवान् | “अहं तव गोपालं मेलितुम् इच्छामि | कृपया मां दर्शयतु” इति पृष्टवान् | सर्वे वनं गतवन्तः च |

At the teacher’s house, the students gave beautiful gifts. The teacher saw Shyam. “What have you brought for me” asked the teacher. The boy became shy and sad. Very slowly he gave his pot. All the students saw the ugly pot and laughed. However, the good teacher became happy. Happily, he transferred the curd into a larger pot. As and when the pot became empty it again got full. The teacher was surprised. “Where did you get this pot?” asked the teacher. The boy told the teacher about Gopal. “I desire to meet with gopal. Kindly show me” asked the teacher. They all went to the forest.

बालकः गोपालं आह्वयत् | परन्तु कोऽपि न आगतः | बालकः पुनर्पुनः उच्चैः गोपालस्य नाम अभजन् तथापि सः न आगतवान् | तथा सर्वे आकाशात् अशरीरवाणीं शृणुवन्ति स्म | “नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य | यस्य हृदये भक्तिः अस्ति सः एव माम् द्रष्टुं शक्यते” | आचार्यः बालकं अवदत् - अद्य त्वम् एव अस्माकं गुरुः | वयं सर्वे तव शिष्याः भवामः |

The boy called Gopal. However no one came. The boy loudly called gopal again and again but still no one came. At that time an invisible voice spoke from the skies. “I am not visible to all. Whose heart is filled with devotion, he alone is worthy of seeing me.” The teacher told the boy. “Today you alone is our teacher. We have all become your disciple.”
