एकदा उत्तरप्रदेशे काशिराज्यात् बहिः एकं सुन्दरं उद्यानम् आसीत् | तस्यां वाटिकायाम् एव एकस्मिन् उटजे तस्य उद्यानपालकः निवसति स्म | तस्य नामधेयं वृक्षक: आसीत् | अनेकानि सस्यानि बहुविधा: शाका: प्रभूताः लताः च तस्मिन् उद्याने विराजन्ते स्म | तेषां पारिजाताः शङ्कपुष्पाणि जपाकुसुमानि च यात्रिकेभ्यः रोचन्ते स्म | एकस्मिन् वसन्तकालदिने यदा पुष्पाणां सुगन्धः वायुना उह्यते स्म तदा वृक्षकस्य सुहृत् कुसुमानां आमोदं आघ्राय उद्यानस्य अन्तः प्राविशत् |

Once on the outskirts of Kashi there was a beautiful garden. In that garden in a hut lived its gardener. His name was Vrikshaka. Many plants, plenty of vegetables, and numerous creepers shone in the garden. Of them the travelers liked jasmines, conch flowers, and hibiscuses. One spring day when the fragrance of the flowers were being carried by the wind, his close friend entered the garden, smelling the flowers.

मित्रम् अवदत्, “भोः उत्सवसमयः इदानीम् | काश्याम् नाटकानि भवन्ति आपणाः शोभन्ते स्वादिष्टं भोजनं लभ्यते | अथ तत्र गन्तव्यम् एव | आगामि बुधवासरे पौर्णिमायां तिथौ आवाम् महत्या आशया प्रस्थानं करिष्यावः | वृक्षकः शङ्कया अवदत्, “मया गन्तुं इष्टम् एव परं कः सस्यानां पालनं करोति? वृष्टिः न भवेत् | यदि अहं काशीं गच्छामि तर्हि तानि निश्चयेन मरिष्यन्ति” | अनन्तरं यदा वृक्षकस्य विषादं प्राप्त: मनः चिन्तयत् आसीत तदा तरोः उपरि चपलकः नाम वानरः अधः अवतीर्य तस्य पुरतः स्थितः |

The friend said, “Hey there, it is now the festival season. In the town of Kashi there are plays, the shops are shining, and we’ll get tasty food. We must go there. The coming wednesday on the full moon night let us go there with great expectations.” Vrikshaka replied with dismay, “I desire to come there but who will look after the garden? It might not rain. If I go to Kashi the plants might die. Later, when the downcast gardener was thinking, a monkey by the name of Chapalaka descended a tree and stood before him.

सः एवम् अवदत् |“भोः मित्र! भवता मित्रेण सह समुत्त्पन्नं संवादं मया श्रुतम् | अहम् एतेषां सस्यपालनं करोमि | अथ भवान् विश्वासेन गच्छतु | प्रतिदिनं जलं पूरयित्वा सस्यानि पोषयामि | चिन्ता मास्तु | भवान् अद्य निःशङ्केन निद्रां करोतु” | एतद्वचनेन वृक्षकेन अत्यन्तं सुखं अनुभूय झटिति तस्य आगमनं मित्रं सूचितम् | अचिरात् मित्रे उत्सवस्य विनोदार्थं काशीं प्रस्थितौ |

The monkey said, “Hey Friend, I heard the conversation that happened with you and your friend. I will look after these plants. Please go and have faith in me. I will water the plants daily and nourish them. Don’t be concerned. So today sleep without any anxiety.” By these words Vrikshaka experienced great joy and immediately informed his friend of his travel.

अत्रान्तरे चपलकः मित्रान् आह्वयत् | “भोः सस्यानां वर्धनं अस्माभिः कृतम्” | तदा आम्रलोभः नामकः कपिः अपृच्छत्, “भद्र! कानिचन सस्यानि वामनानि अन्ये केचित् वृक्षाः दीर्घाः च | कथं ज्ञातं कियत् जलं आवश्यकम्?” इति | चपलक: “उत्तमः प्रश्नः” इत्युक्त्वा चिन्तनम् आरब्धवान् | अनेकबुद्धिः नाम वानरः उक्तवान् “वयं सस्यानि भूम्याः आकृष्य तेषां मूलं मिमीमहे | तदनुसारेण यावत् जलं आवश्यकं तावत् एव दद्मः” इति | चपलकः अविलंबेन अङ्ग्यकरोत् |

Later, Chapalaka called his friends. “Guys, we have to grow these plants.” At that time a monkey by the name Amralobha asked, “Oh auspicious one, some plants are short while some trees are long. How do we know how much water is necessary?” Chapalaka replied, “Excellent question” and began thinking. A monkey by the name Anekabuddhi said, “let us pull the plants from the ground and measure the root. In that manner whatever water is necessary that much we’ll give.” Chapalaka agreed without any delay.

एवमेव मूर्खवानराः उद्धृतानि सस्यानि परिशील्य कूपात् जलं आदाय पुनः भूम्यां आरोपितवन्तः | कस्माच्चित् दिनात् अनन्तरं बहूनि पुष्पाणि शुष्काणि जातानि अनेकानि पर्णानि पतितानि च | रुग्णं उद्यानं शनैः शनैः सौन्दर्यरहितं सम्पन्नम् | एतदभ्यन्तरे वृक्षकः “अयं चपलकःआञ्जनेयसदृशः” इति दिवास्वप्नं कुर्वन् विचिन्त्य तस्य मनसि महान् सन्तोष: उत्पन्न: |

In this manner the foolish monkeys examined the plants after pulling them out, drew water from the well, and once again planted them. After some days many plants dried up and lots of leaves fell. The diseased garden slowly lost its beauty. In the interim, Virkshaka was daydreaming that Chapalaka was like Hanuman and so he experienced great joy.

महोत्सवकार्यक्रमाः समाप्य वृक्षकेण यदा गृहं प्रति आगतं तदा दूरतः मृताः लताः दृष्टाः | उद्विग्नः चिन्ताक्रान्ताश्च सन् सः धावित्वा उद्यानं प्रविष्टवान् | उद्यानस्य पूर्णं नष्टं दृष्ट्वा तस्य चक्षुषी अश्रुपूर्णे सञ्जाते | “अहो विनष्टोऽस्मि सर्वे पश्यन्तु मम दुर्भाग्यम् | “अहं नृपं किं वदामि” इति सः शोचयति स्म | तदा तस्य धीमत् मित्रं उक्तवान “यः सहाय्यं कर्तुं इच्छति प्रथमं तस्य सामर्थ्यं अस्ति वा नास्ति अस्माभिः ज्ञातव्यम् | सहायकः भवितुं नार्हति चेत् तस्य सहायतायाः किं प्रयोजनम् ? अविचारेण तव उद्यानं नष्टम् |”

After completing the festivities, as Vrikshaka was going home he saw dead creepers from a far. Being disturbed and concerned he ran and entered the house. On seeing the garden destroyed completely his eyes were filled with tears. Vrikshaka lamented, “Alas! I am destroyed. You all look at my misfortune.” At that time his intelligent friend remarked, “When a person is trying to help, we must first ascertain if he is capable of it. If he is incapable, what good is his help? Without proper inquiry your garden is now destroyed.”
